Smith’s Goal Helps Women’s Soccer Record Pivotal Tie at Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Following a scoreless first half, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team answered with a key tying goal by Katie Smith that ended up being the final goal of the game as the Skyhawks tied 1-1 with Colorado Mesa University Sunday afternoon.

Colorado Mesa (6-5-4, 4-4-3 RMAC) snagged the first goal of the game just over 61 minutes in. With time ticking down, FLC (5-8-2, 4-6-1 RMAC) was able to get a key push 16 minutes later when Smith lobbed a perfect shot over a drawn out goalie for her third goal of the season to even the game at one at the 77:54 mark.

The Skyhawks then tried to win the game over the next several minutes with Skylar Byrnes, Smith and Maddy Duran landing shots on goal that were all saved. The Mavericks then flipped the script and tried to take the lead when a shot by Lexi Newton was saved by Britt Blomso to keep the game tied going into overtime.

In the first overtime, Colorado Mesa had three shots, with two ending up on goal that were both saved by Blomso to move the match into the second overtime. In the second 10 minutes of extra time, Emma Patron had an early shot 31 seconds in that went wide left and the Mavericks fired off three shots, with none of them ending up on goal to keep the game tied at one after 110 minutes.

In the first half, both teams had a shot on goal that was saved, as they combined for 11 shots over the first 45 minutes and then over the final 45 minutes of regulation, the teams tallied 15 shots. Overall for the game Colorado Mesa held a 24-9 edge on shots, including 9-6 on goal. The Mavericks had a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks and FLC committed 18 fouls to six for Colorado Mesa.

Smith paced the Skyhawks with four shots, including three on goal. Blomso went all 110 minutes in net and made eight saves.

Alexis Allard had eight shots to lead Colorado Mesa. Emily Signorio played all 110 minutes in net and came away with five saves.

The final week of the regular season will have a lot at stake. Currently the Skyhawks are tied for tenth with Western Colorado University with 13 points. FLC sits two points back of Colorado Mesa for the eighth and final tournament spot and are just three points back of Colorado Christian in seventh. The top eight teams make the conference tournament and FLC could get as high as fifth in the standings if they were to win out and other teams lost and or tied ahead of them.

FLC returns home to conclude the regular season against CSU-Pueblo on Thursday starting at 3 p.m. at Dirks Field and then Senior Day Saturday at 1 p.m. versus New Mexico Highlands. The game with CSU-Pueblo will feature a matchup of teams within a point of each other as the ThunderWolves have 14 points and currently sit ninth in the standings.

On Senior Day Saturday, FLC will honor their three seniors in Renee Terrell, Kaylee Mickens and Ma'ila Aluli.
