Men’s Soccer Downs #23 Colorado Mesa in Double OT Thriller

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Just when it appeared the teams were going to end in a tie, Nicolas Perez rocketed a shot that was saved, but resulted in a corner kick. Off the kick by Raul Pescador, Marshall Metzger was there to get another late goal against the Mavericks, only this time it was the game-winner in sending the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team to a 1-0 double overtime win over #23 Colorado Mesa University Thursday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

FLC (8-6-2, 6-6-1 RMAC) was definitely the more aggressive team in the second extra session, with Pescador and Ryan Lee firing shots before Perez and Metzger had their shots back-to-back. Leading up to the winning goal, Perez made a move near midfield and got outside the box and launched a bullet towards the top corner that was saved by Briley Guarneri. Pescador then delivered a perfect ball off the corner that Metzger handled in front, knocking it home off his chest and in at the 108:12 mark sending FLC to the 1-0 win. It was Metzger's third goal of the season.

Earlier on, both teams were getting shots off, but the first to end up on goal was by Colorado Mesa (10-2-4, 8-2-3 RMAC) just over 17 minutes in that was corralled by Ventura Salcido. Lucas Matelich and Landon Gibson followed with shots just past the 20-minute mark that were both saved by Guarneri.

After each goalie turned away a few more shots, the game went into halftime scoreless.

Both goalies exchanged saves early in the second half before FLC closed the half strong ending up with three shots on goal from Gibson and two by Perez.

FLC landed the only shot on goal in the first overtime after Colorado Mesa fired a shot wide, Pescador ripped one on net that was saved by Guarneri.

FLC held an 18-17 edge on shots and 11-4 on goal. FLC had two corner kicks to one for Colorado Mesa. As expected with these teams there were 29 fouls and five cards handed out.

It's the first win for FLC against Colorado Mesa since the 2012 season that ironically finished 1-0 in double overtime at Walker Field in Grand Junction.

Despite the win, MSU Denver won earlier in the day to secure the sixth and final RMAC Tournament spot.

FLC will close the 2018 season this Saturday at 11 a.m. at CSU-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves fell in overtime earlier Thursday to Adams State 2-1.
