Longacre Tallies 16 Kills at New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Bailey Longacre posted a match-high 16 kills and hit .419 to lead the Fort Lewis College volleyball team Saturday night against New Mexico Highlands University. Despite her strong effort, the Cowgirls took the 3-0 victory (27-25, 25-22, 25-21) in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

FLC (9-12, 9-8 RMAC) now holds a one-game lead over Adams State for the final spot in the RMAC Tournament after the Grizzlies defeated CSU-Pueblo in four sets on Saturday. The two teams will meet in Durango this coming Thursday to battle it out for the final tournament spot. UC-Colorado Springs defeated Western earlier on Saturday to move to 10-7 in conference and even if FLC was to tie the Mountain Lions for seventh, UCCS holds the tiebreaker from the earlier win this season.

New Mexico Highlands (8-17, 6-11 RMAC) used an early 5-0 run in the first set to break open a 5-all tie. The Skyhawks used their own 5-0 run a few points later to open up a 13-12 lead with Ohiyah Shirley, Longacre and Haley Christiansen all contributing points. Longacre then took over later in the set with a kill and then a service ace to move FLC to set point at 24-22. The Cowgirls fought back to even the set at 24 when a solo lock by Tye Wedhorn again moved FLC to set point at 25-24. That's when NMHU took over scoring the final three points to take the set at 27-25.

NMHU started the second set on a 5-1 run when an attack error by the Cowgirls helped ignite a 4-0 run by FLC with Longacre adding a pair of kills and then one from Christiansen to even the set at five. Just when it looked like NMHU was going to take charge of the set in front at 17-14, FLC rallied with a 3-0 spurt capped by a double-block from Longacre and Hannah Martinez tied the set at 17. After Longacre and Martinez added kills to retie the set at 18 and 19, FLC fought back one last time to even the set at 22 when NMHU closed on a 3-0 run to take the second set at 25-22.

Wedhorn and Longacre posted kills early in the third set to push FLC in front 8-7. Following a Longacre kill at 10-all, NMHU scored seven of the next eight points to open up a 17-11 lead. FLC refused to go away, fighting back to within two a couple of times, with the last coming at 23-21 on a kill by Wedhorn. After that, NMHU recorded a pair of kills to take the set at 25-21 and the match at 3-0.

Both teams hit well on the night with FLC recording 44 kills to 13 errors in 129 chances for a .240 percentage. NMHU countered with 53 kills to 16 errors in 136 chances for a .272 percentage. FLC held the advantage in service aces (5-4), blocks (6-1), while NMHU held the edge in assists (52-42) and digs (64-60).

In addition to the big offensive night for Longacre, Christiansen added a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Wedhorn added nine kills and three blocks. Swackenberg and Longacre also added three blocks, while Swackenberg dished out 38 assists. Swackenberg recently eclipsed the 2,000 career assist mark, as she has over 2,100 in her career and counting. Megan Graefe led the team in digs with 18.

Cynthia Norris and Julie Staffler powered NMHU with 15 kills apiece, Celina Naranjo had 27 assists and Tiffany Matchett added 17 digs.

FLC will close the regular season this Thursday at home against Adams State starting at 7 p.m. looking to secure the final RMAC Tournament spot. It will also be Senior Day for the six Skyhawk seniors in Kendra Swackenberg, Haley Christiansen, Megan Graefe, Hannah Martinez, Maddie LeBlanc and Jessie Roukema.
