DURANGO, Colo. – Britney Johnson continued her scoring tear as she knocked home a free kick goal late in the first half to help the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team stay right with #24 UC-Colorado Springs. Holding just a 2-1 halftime lead, the nationally-ranked Mountain Lions tallied two more markers in the second half on their way to taking the 4-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday at Dirks Field.
UCCS (9-1-1, 7-0 RMAC) scored in the 14th minute when Anna Gregg launched a shot from roughly 20 yards out for the early 1-0 lead. Just five minutes later in the 19th minute, Tarah Patterson capitalized on a penalty kick goal to move UCCS out to the 2-0 advantage.
FLC (4-5-1, 3-3 RMAC) responded right after, getting a pair of corner kicks from Emma Patron, with Charlie Kaiser hitting a shot just wide. After some play in the midfield, FLC generated another rush that resulted in a hand ball touch penalty on the Mountain Lions just outside the box. That's when Johnson stepped up and knocked it home, just inside the left post to leave UCCS with the 2-1 lead in the 38th minute.
The Skyhawks had an early chance in the second half with Johnson tallying a shot on goal that was saved by Kaylyn Smith. UCCS then jumped the lead back to two in the 70th minute when Amelia Junge got loose in the box off a pass from Naomi Gurrola to open up a 3-1 lead.
UCCS closed the scoring in the 86th minute when Tori Maydew took a pass from Gurrola and chipped it past the goalie for a 4-1 lead and final score.
UCCS held a 25-6 edge on shots, with 10-3 on goal. UCCS also had three corner kicks to two for FLC, while the Skyhawks committed 13 fouls to eight for UCCS.
Johnson led the team with two shots, both on goal. Kaiser, Katie Smith, Dylan Barker and Diana Sifuentes also added shots for FLC. In net, Kaylee Mickens went all 90 minutes and recorded six saves.
Gregg and Patterson had five shots each to lead UCCS, with Patterson landing three on goal. Smith went all 90 minutes and recorded two saves.
