Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brian Kortz

Men’s Soccer Plays Second Straight OT Game Against UCCS

DURANGO, Colo. – For the second straight home game, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team needed extra time. Only this time, each team had scored, as the Skyhawks, backed by a goal from Coleman Kane with just 10 seconds remaining, pushed the game to overtime. UC-Colorado Springs didn't wait long as they struck just over a minute in with the game-winner to take the 2-1 win over the Skyhawks in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Sunday at Dirks Field.

The weather was great to start, but as the second half began, the storm blew in and the rain soon followed. That made for a game that featured lots of chances and lots of physical play, with the teams combining for 29 shots, 34 fouls and 10 yellow cards. All 10 yellow cards came after the 50-minute mark, with Marshall Metzger getting two, which resulted in a red card at the 58:34 mark that made the Skyhawks play a man down the rest of the way.

FLC (5-4-2, 3-4-1 RMAC) came out shooting in the first half taking nine shots to four for UCCS (5-4-2, 4-3-1 RMAC). Hakeem Rabiu, Bar Hazut and Raul Pescador all tallied shots over the first 20 minutes, with Rabiu's shot being saved by Scott Jensen.

UCCS got a decent look late in the first half by Alex VonHolle, but Ventura Salcido was up to the task recording the save to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

With the cards and fouls starting to take off in the second half, UCCS took advantage of a yellow card issued on FLC in the box that gave VonHolle a penalty kick. VonHolle scored on the try in the 82nd minute to give UCCS a 1-0 lead.

The Skyhawks then brought the pressure looking for the tie, with goalie Salcido delivering a nice ball from around midfield after a free kick that went into the box and Kane just missed on a header attempt. After Rabiu just missed on a shot high with over a minute to play, FLC brought the all-out attack as time ticked down under 30 seconds.

Following some chances outside the box, Rabiu was able to get it over to Nicolas Perez, who sent it along to Kane in the box who shot the ball just passed the keeper with 10 seconds to play to tie the game at one.

That sent the game to overtime and a foul on FLC setup a free kick from about 35 yards out. UCCS sent the ball into the box and Corey Carabajal took a shot that was saved by Ventura, but on the rebound, he collected and sent it into the net at the 91:16 mark to lift the Mountain Lions to the 2-1 win.

FLC held a 16-13 shot advantage, while UCCS had a 6-4 edge with shots on goal. Rabiu recorded six shots, Hazut had three, while Pescador and Kane had two apiece. In net, Salcido went all 91:16 minutes and made four saves.

VonHolle led the Mountain Lions with five shots and both Carabajal and Sam Bonano added two apiece. In net, Jensen also played all 91:16 minutes and collected three saves.

FLC will remain at home this coming Friday when they will host Westminster starting at 3 p.m. It will be senior day on Sunday against Dixie State beginning at 1 p.m.
