Yocky Goes for 18 Points and 11 Rebounds at Eastern New Mexico

PORTALES, N.M. – Alyssa Yocky put together another strong game to open the season, as her double-double helped pace the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team against Eastern New Mexico University Saturday night. The Skyhawks held the edge entering the fourth quarter when the Greyhounds roared back to take the 58-55 victory.

"We battled tonight, we took a big step from last night to tonight. I told the team 'we have all the confidence in the world in you as coaches, we know you can go out there and execute,'" Head Coach Jason Flores said. "We missed four easy shots, got tentative and momentum turned against us in the fourth quarter. The crowd was loud, it was a great learning experience, but we need to be done with losing close games. The important thing is we keep progressing, now it's time to start knocking off some w's. I definitely have a lot of respect for Coach Prock and this Eastern New Mexico team, but we are not into moral victories, we should've closed it out, but we will get home and keep getting better."

FLC (0-2) won the first three quarters and entered the fourth quarter holding a 10-point lead. ENMU (2-0) then caught fire behind their home crowd to outscore FLC 21-8 over the final 10 minutes to grab the victory.

Yocky once again had a strong showing scoring a game-high 18 points and adding 11 rebounds, which led all players as well. She went 7-11 from the field and had four steals in 31 minutes. Kayla Herrera reached double-figures with 14 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Sydney Candelaria also came away with four steals.

FLC ended up making 21-55 (38.2) from the field, 4-14 (28.6) from three and 9-16 (56.3) from the foul line. The Skyhawks held a slight advantage in points in the paint (26-22) and fastbreak points (20-18).

After the teams traded leads through the first three minutes, FLC began to take control and led most of the game. Tied at seven, Herrera connected on a layup to trigger an 8-0 run with Alyssa Adams and Kaitlyn Romero each hitting three-pointers to give the Skyhawks a 15-7 lead at the 4:54 mark.

Following a run by Eastern New Mexico, FLC closed the quarter on a 3-0 run with Yocky hitting a layup and then a foul shot by Candelaria to take a 20-16 lead into the second quarter.

A jumper by Jordan Carter in the paint and then four straight points from Yocky helped move the lead out to 10 at 26-16 lead. Another Yocky basket a few minutes later kept the lead at 10 before the Greyhounds closed the half on a 5-0 run to leave FLC ahead 30-25 at halftime.

Yocky started the second half strong with a jumper in the paint just over a minute in. Holding a five-point lead, Carter helped start a 6-0 run with a jumper halfway through the third quarter. Yocky added two from the line and Candelaria closed the run with a layup to move FLC out to the 39-28 advantage.

The lead got as high as 13 with under a minute to play in the quarter on a free throw by Candelaria.

Eastern New Mexico pieced together a 9-0 run from the end of the third quarter into the fourth quarter, getting to within four at 47-43 with 7:17 to play in the game.

The Greyhounds kept coming and tied the game at 49 with 4:36 to play. FLC responded with Yocky hitting a jumper in the paint and Herrera hitting a layup off the fastbreak to push the lead back to four at 53-49.

Eastern New Mexico rallied with a 5-0 run to go back ahead 54-53, just to watch Carter connect on a jumper to give FLC a 55-54 lead. Each team then had chances over the next minute, but couldn't convert when a layup by Eastern New Mexico's Treyanna Clay had the Greyhounds in front 56-55 with 1:31 to play.

The teams traded possessions before a steal by the Greyhounds forced FLC to foul with just 12 seconds to play. Clay hit both from the line to move the lead to three. Out of an FLC timeout, the Skyhawks couldn't get a shot off, with the Greyhounds taking the 58-55 victory.

Clay paced Eastern New Mexico with 12 points, while Dasia Johnson and Laura Rowe added 10 points apiece. ENMU went 18-57 (31.6) from the field, 6-24 (25) from three and 16-21 (76.2) at the foul line.

FLC will now return home to face Northern New Mexico this coming Wednesday starting at 5:30 p.m. inside Whalen Gym. It will also be the Nike N7 games presented by Sean McCabe, CPA.
