Women’s Basketball to Host Eagles for Nike N7 Game Wednesday and University of the Southwest Friday

DURANGO, Colo. – The first home games of the season have arrived for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team as they will host Northern New Mexico on Wednesday, which will also be part of the Nike N7 games presented by Sean McCabe, CPA. They will close the week on Friday against the University of the Southwest.

FLC (0-2) started off with a pair of tough losses, but just as easily could be 2-0 following a pair of losses in the final minutes. A couple of late three-pointers by Western New Mexico helped the Mustangs rally to win in overtime, 70-68, and then the next night against Eastern New Mexico, the Greyhounds used a big fourth quarter to hold on for a 58-55 victory.

The Skyhawks will face Northern New Mexico first on Wednesday starting at 5:30 p.m. Last year the two teams met for the Nike N7 on Nov. 16 and FLC rolled to a 105-51 victory. Kayla Herrera and Jordan Carter tallied 13 points apiece, as the Skyhawks shot a blistering 60 percent (39-65), went 8-10 (80) from three and 19-21 (91) from the foul line.

FLC averages 61.5 points per game and allows 64.0 per game. The Skyhawks are connecting on 37 percent (44-118) from the field and 10-36 (28) from three. Opponents are making 36 percent (38-106) and 13-40 (33) from three.

Alyssa Yocky has put together a pair of solid games leading the team in both points per game (18.5) and rebounds (7.5). She's making 61 percent (14-23) from the field and 8-8 from the foul line. Herrera is right behind at 15 points per game, connecting on four three-pointers and is tied for the team lead in steals with five along with Sydney Candelaria. Carter is also averaging double-figures at 10.5 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per contest. Candelaria is averaging nine points per game and is making 43 percent (6-14) from the field.

As a team, FLC ranks in the top-five in the RMAC in several categories including fifth in assists (25), fifth in defensive rebounds (26), fifth and 80th nationally in field goal percentage (35.8), first in the RMAC and 80th nationally in free throw attempts (43), second in the RMAC in free throws made (25), fourth in rebounds (76), fifth in rebounds per game (38), fifth in scoring offense (61.5), first in the RMAC and 49th nationally in steals (22), second in the RMAC and 56th nationally in steals per game (11), fourth in three point field goals attempted (36), three pointers made (10) and three pointers per game (5), second in the RMAC and 30th nationally in turnover margin (8), second in the RMAC and 15th nationally in turnovers forced (26.50).

Individually, Yocky is first in the RMAC and 17th nationally in double-doubles (1), fifth in the RMAC and 74th nationally in field goals made (14), fifth in the RMAC and 74th nationally in field goal percentage (60.9), fourth in free throws made (8), tied for first nationally in free throw percentage (100), second in the RMAC and 92nd nationally in points per game (18.5), fifth in rebounds (15), eighth in rebounds per game (7.5) and eighth in steals (4). Herrera is third in the RMAC and 51st nationally in field goals attempted (31), 10th in field goals made (10), fourth in free throws attempted (10), ninth in points per game (15), fourth in steals (5), sixth in steals per game (2.50), fourth in three point field goals attempted (12), sixth in three point field goals made (4) and seventh in three point field goals per game (2.0). Candelaria is fourth in the RMAC and 98th nationally in steals with five.

Northern New Mexico is 1-5 overall and have lost five straight since a season-opening win against University of the Southwest (64-50). Melanie Secody leads the team at 11.7 points per game, while Cheyenne Cordova adds 9.5 and Jazlynn Muniz with 9.0 per game. Katelyn Yuzos leads the team at 5.2 rebounds per game.

FLC will close the week against the University of the Southwest on Friday, also at 5:30 p.m. The Mustangs are 2-4 overall on the season and have lost two straight since a 76-73 win over Northern New Mexico. Aaliyah Wheatfall leads the team averaging 12.2 points per game. Harlei Haceesa adds 9.8 per game, while Haceesa leads the team in rebounding at 7.2 per contest.
