Balanced Attack Leads Men’s Basketball Past Northern New Mexico in Nike N7 Game

DURANGO, Colo. – With 11 players registering at least a point and Marquel Beasley, Otas Iyekekpolor, Riley Farris and Alex Semadeni combining for 56 points, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team cruised to a 83-60 win over Northern New Mexico Wednesday night inside Whalen Gym for the Nike N7 games.

Beasley led the way with 18 points, along with three rebounds and one each of an assist, a block and a steal. Iyekekpolor posted 15 points and four rebounds, while also sending a block back. Farris reached double-figures with 14 points and six rebounds, along with a block. Semadeni chipped in nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Brenden Boatwright added eight points and Cesar Molina with seven.

FLC shot well from the field making 29-60 (48), but ended up 3-16 (19) from three and 22-33 (67) from the foul line. The Skyhawks held the edge on points off turnovers (18-14), second-chance points (9-8), bench points (40-9) and points in the paint (44-30).

Behind a packed gym, FLC came out fired up scoring the first six points of the game behind jumpers from Semadeni and Farris and then a layup from Beasley for the 6-0 lead three minutes in. After Northern New Mexico (3-3) fought back to tie the game at nine, FLC (2-1) unleashed a 12-0 run to put the game out of reach.

During the spurt, Brenden Boatwright started it with a pair of free throws. Beasley added a pair of jumpers, Farris hit two from the line, then sent down a monster dunk before Molina closed the run with a fastbreak layup that left FLC with a 21-9 lead with six minutes to play before halftime.

Holding a 10-point lead, FLC closed the half on an 8-1 run, with Iyekekpolor starting the rally with two from the line. Keven Biggs drilled a three, Brendan La Rose had a tip-in and then two more from the line by Iyekekpolor had FLC with a 34-16 lead at halftime.

Northern New Mexico tried to get things going early in the second half, getting to within 14, but it was just too much Skyhawks. FLC answered with a tough layup in the paint by Beasley and then a three-point-play by Semadeni pushed the lead to 48-29 with 15:26 to play in the game.

A Beasley jumper and Farris layup near the midway point of the second stanza jumped the lead to 26 at 61-35. The lead reached 30 following a three by Beasley and then two from the line by Farris at 70-40.

The teams traded points down the stretch with Wyatt Hayes and Orion Clay tallying points to round out the scoring and giving FLC the 83-60 victory.

Northern New Mexico made 22-62 (36) from the field, 4-24 (17) from three and 12-16 (75) from the foul line. Naquwan Solomon had a big game for the Eagles scoring 25 points. Bryce Simmons added 19.
