Volleyball Battles Against Top Seed Orediggers in RMAC Tournament

GOLDEN, Colo. – It was the exact start the Fort Lewis College volleyball team was looking for. Entering as the eighth seed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament, the Skyhawks came out on fire grabbing the first set in convincing fashion. Colorado School of Mines again showed why they were the top seed in the conference as they regrouped to take the final three sets to defeat the Skyhawks 3-1 (17-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-14) Tuesday night inside Lockridge Arena.

FLC (9-14) opened the match hitting .310 and limited Colorado School of Mines (23-4) to just a .133 percentage. Trailing 5-4, FLC reeled off seven straight points to force an Oredigger timeout. Bailey Longacre got things going with a kill and after a Haley Christiansen kill, Ohiyah Shirley spun in a pair of service aces and then Christiansen closed the run with two straight kills for an 11-5 advantage. After trading points, another run, this time a 4-0 spurt with a kill by Tye Wedhorn and three straight errors by Colorado School of Mines had FLC out to a 17-7 lead. The Orediggers made one last push going on a 7-0 run to get to within 22-17. FLC regrouped and tallied the final three points of the set with kills by Longacre and Kendra Swackenberg, around an error by the Orediggers for the 25-17 opening set win.

The Skyhawks kept the momentum going right into the second set scoring the first three points, with Wedhorn and Christiansen combining for a double-block in-between a pair of errors by the Orediggers. Following a run by Colorado School of Mines, FLC got back to within four at 14-10 on a kill by Christiansen, just to watch the Orediggers go on a 7-0 run. FLC tried to make one final push, but it was too much to overcome as Colorado School of Mines grabbed the second set at 25-15.

FLC moved out to an early lead at 5-4 on a kill by Shirley in the third set. The Skyhawks fought back after a run by the Orediggers as a kill by Maddie LeBlanc and a double-block by Wedhorn and Longacre even the set at 17. Then another double-block, this time by Swackenberg and Longacre tied the set again at 18, but the Colorado School of Mines reeled off six straight points to move to set point at 24-18. FLC didn't go away scoring three straight points, with the last coming on a double-block by Wedhorn and Swackenberg to get to within three at 24-21 when a kill by Abby Tiesman gave the Orediggers the set at 25-21.

Colorado School of Mines jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth set. FLC came charging back, using a 3-0 run, with Longacre capping the spurt with a kill to pull to within one at 11-10. The Skyhawks kept the deficit at one at 14-13 when the Orediggers went on a 11-1 run to end the set at 25-14 to win the match 3-1.

Longacre led the offense with 13 kills, followed by 10 from Wedhorn. Longacre sent back four blocks, Swackenberg had 31 assists and Shirley had 17 digs.

Tiesman led Colorado School of Mines with 24 kills, Hannah Martin send back seven blocks, Drew Stokes dished out 55 assists and Elle Duis had 22 digs.

Not only was this the first appearance in the RMAC Tournament since 2013, but it was the first set won in an RMAC Tournament game since 2007 when FLC fell in five sets to Adams State. It was also the first time FLC had won a set against Colorado School of Mines since the 2009 season when they faced the Orediggers twice that year and won a set in each match.

All the top seeds won on Tuesday with No. 2 Dixie State defeating UCCS, 3-1, No. 3 Colorado Mesa swept Colorado Christian and No. 4 MSU Denver defeated Regis, 3-1.
