Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brian Kortz

Semadeni Tallies 21 Points in Another OT Game Against Yellow Jackets

DURANGO, Colo. – A night later and the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team was right back in the same situation. Playing their second overtime in as many nights, the Skyhawks weren't able to hold an overtime lead as Black Hills State University remained perfect in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play after taking the 70-66 win over the Skyhawks Sunday inside Whalen Gym.

Alex Semadeni brought the energy all night for the Skyhawks (5-5, 1-4 RMAC) posting 21 points on 7-16 shooting. He also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out two assists, added two blocks and a steal in 42 minutes. Two other players reached double-figures in Marquel Beasley and AJ Sparks as each added 12 points.
Similar to the night before, FLC controlled play throughout the first half and for part of the second half before the opposition began to make their move. Beasley opened the scoring 25 minutes in with authority throwing down a slam off a pass by Will Wittman.

Wittman then found the stroke from long range hitting back-to-back three-pointers to stretch the lead to 8-3 three minutes in. After BHSU (6-3, 5-0 RMAC) came back to take the lead at 9-8, a Semadeni three-point-play kept FLC on top the rest of the half.

It ended up being an 8-0 run with Keven Biggs hitting a three-pointer and Semadeni adding a jumper for the 16-9 lead at the 13:30 mark.

The Yellow Jackets kept chipping the deficit back to three when a Beasley jumper at the 5:19 mark helped ignite a 10-1 run to close the half. Semadeni added a tip-in, Beasley sunk another jumper in the paint and then layups from both Semadeni and Beasley closed the half leaving FLC with the 33-21 lead at the break.

After a Semadeni jumper two minutes into the second stanza kept the lead at 11, BHSU responded in a big way going on a 10-0 run to pull to within 35-34 at the 13:45 mark. FLC countered with free throws by Sparks and Beasley to push back in front by five.

A 6-0 BHSU run gave the Yellow Jackets the lead back at 40-39. From that point on, it would be a fight the rest of the way. BHSU jumped ahead by three, just to watch Semadeni knock down an open top-of-the-key three at 49-all with 3:57 to play.

Tyler Oliver pushed BHSU out to a 56-53 lead when he collected an offensive rebound and put back with 1:35 to play. FLC answered with two from the line by Beasley. A foul on the other end gave the Yellow Jackets two from the line and Dez Stoudamire hit both to give BHSU a 58-55 lead with 20 seconds to play.

FLC took a timeout and ran a play for a corner three for Kireed Johnson. As he went up for the shot, he was fouled resulting in three free throws. Johnson would hit all three to tie the game at 58 with 12 seconds to play.

BHSU turned to Oliver and as the clock ticked down, he tried a three at the top-of-the-key that hit the back rim. Semadeni collected the rebound, but didn't have time to take a shot to send the game into overtime.

In the extra session, Sparks started things out with a strong drive for a layup 20 seconds in. Connor O'Hearn answered with a three from the wing to give BHSU the one-point lead. Two free throws by Oliver followed to give BHSU a 63-60 lead with 3:33 to play.

Semadeni then took over, hitting a running jumper in the paint and on a later BHSU possession, he blocked Oliver's three-point attempt, got the rebound and was then fouled. On the play, Oliver was also whistled for a technical with a little extra after the play giving Semadeni four foul shots. He hit all four to give FLC a 66-63 lead with 2:25 to play.

Just when FLC had all the momentum, BHSU quickly took it away, as they went down the floor and hit a big corner three by Fraser Malcolm to tie the game. Malcolm then hit a layup on the next trip down after FLC missed a jumper to push the Yellow Jackets out to a 68-66 lead with 1:05 to play.

The Skyhawks went for a three next time down, but the shot missed and BHSU grabbed the rebound. On their next trip down, a foul was called and O'Hearn was only able to hit one-of-two leaving BHSU with a 69-66 lead with 27 seconds to play.

Out of a timeout, FLC went for the tie, but the three-point attempt was short and the Yellow Jackets secured the rebound and were fouled. Stoudamire hit one-of-two to seal the win for the Yellow Jackets.

FLC shot 21-61 (34) from the field, 4-24 (17) from three and 20-25 (80) from the foul line. They committed just 10 turnovers, while forcing 17 which turned into a slight 10-8 points off turnovers advantage.

As it turned out, FLC also held the edge on second-chance points (7-4), bench points (22-19) and points in the paint (30-24).

Oliver led three Yellow Jackets in double-figures scoring 21 points and just missing out on a double-double with nine rebounds. Malcolm added 16 points and O'Hearn with 13. BHSU went 23-52 (44) from the field, 10-29 (35) from three and 14-18 (78) at the foul line.

FLC will now be off for the Christmas Break and will return to action at home on New Year's Eve at 3 p.m. against Northern New Mexico inside Whalen Gym.
