Carter, Yocky and Candelaria Combine for 59 Points to Roll Past Eagles

DURANGO, Colo. – Jordan Carter, Alyssa Yocky and Sydney Candelaria not only combined for 59 points, but they all shot over 50 percent and outscored the Eagles by themselves as the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team rolled to a 93-46 victory over Northern New Mexico for the second time this season inside Whalen Gym on New Year's Eve.

Carter shot 11-16 from the field for her 24 points, along with four rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal in 23 minutes. Yocky added 18 points on 7-10 shooting, 2-4 from three and also added nine rebounds, six assists and four steals in 24 minutes. Candelaria went 7-8 from the field for her 17 points, sinking a pair of three-pointers, grabbed two rebounds, dished out two assists and added two steals in 22 minutes. Fellow starter Alyssa Adams just missed out on double-figures with eight points and the fifth starter Kayla Herrera found her teammates all game with 11 assists.

Carter got the scoring started 12 seconds in when she collected a rebound and put back. Off a steal by Herrera, Yocky cashed in off the fastbreak for the 4-0 lead 43 seconds in. An Adams three, a layup by Carter and then a jumper by Herrera off the fastbreak pushed the lead to 11-2 just over three minutes in.

Candelaria had the lead in double-digits at the 4:15 mark when she sank a three-ball for the 16-5 lead. FLC (6-5) held Northern New Mexico (1-14) without a field goal over the final three minutes of the first quarter and in the process went on a 5-0 run with Tanisha Begay drilling a three and a jumper by Aubre Fortner gave the Skyhawks a 24-9 through the first 10 minutes.

The run stretched to 7-0 in the second quarter with a layup by Yocky. Following a basket by the Eagles, FLC went on an 11-0 run with Adams starting the spurt with a trey. Candelaria then came away with a steal, later turning it into a three-point-play after sinking the foul shot. Another Candelaria layup and then a three by Yocky capped the run that left the Skyhawks with a 37-11 lead near the midway point of the quarter.
The lead would remain around 27 before the Eagles closed the half with a three-pointer by Kalisha Kinsel leaving FLC with a 45-21 lead at the break.

Yocky and Carter opened the second half strong with Yocky dialing long distance and Carter a jumper to push the lead to 50-21. In front by 28, FLC went on a 7-0 run to take a 35-point lead with Candelaria starting the spurt with a steal and fastbreak layup. Candelaria added a three-pointer and then she finished her own 7-0 run with another layup for a 59-24 lead near the midway point of the third quarter.

Northern New Mexico made a push over the final few minutes of the quarter, closing to within 25 with FLC leading 63-38 entering the final quarter.

Herrera opened the fourth strong hitting a three-ball and then Yocky added two from the line for a 68-38 lead. Still in front 70-43, FLC allowed just three points over the final eight minutes and in the process scored 23 points. At one point, the Skyhawks went on a 15-0 run.

FLC went 39-66 (59) from the field, 10-28 (36) from three and 5-10 (50) at the foul line. The Skyhawks controlled points off turnovers (32-4), second-chance points (10-5), bench points (21-7), points in the paint (50-22) and fastbreak points (22-2).

Cheyenne Livingston paced the Eagles with 16 points, while Katelyn Yuzos added 11 points. Northern New Mexico went 18-50 (36) from the field, 4-23 (17) from three and 6-8 (75) from the foul line. FLC took care of the ball committing just 10 turnovers, while forcing 23.

The score Monday was nearly identical to the meeting back on Nov. 14 in which FLC took the 92-46 victory.

FLC will return to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play this coming week as they will play at MSU Denver on Friday and then against Chadron State with both games starting at 5:30 p.m.
