Beasley Scores 17 as Men’s Basketball Runs Into Press-Happy, Three-Point Shooting Cowboys

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – New Mexico Highlands University pressed often and sunk 19 three-pointers, scoring 52 points in each half to defeat the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team 104-69 Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Marquel Beasley paced FLC (4-3, 0-2 RMAC) going for 17 points on 4-8 shooting, he also grabbed five rebounds, dished out and assist and added a steal. Alex Semadeni reached double-figures with 10 points, along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Kireed Johnson added nine points and Riley Farris chipped in eight. The Skyhawks went 21-58 (36) from the field, 8-23 (35) from three and 19-24 (79) at the foul line. FLC held the edge on second-chance points (11-8) and points in the paint (22-18).

NMHU (6-1, 2-0 RMAC) opened the scoring nearly two minutes in as both teams struggled to score out of the gate. Beasley pushed FLC on top at the 17:18 mark when he sank a three-pointer off an assist from Cesar Molina.

After the Cowboys scored on the next trip down the floor to go back in front, Beasley helped FLC regain the lead with a jumper at 5-4. He continued to score the first seven points for the Skyhawks when he collected an offensive rebound and putback for the 7-6 lead just over four minutes in.

NMHU then went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Farris broke the run at the 13:31 mark when he hit a tough jumper while also getting fouled. He added the free throw leaving it a 16-10 game.

Another lengthy Cowboy run followed, this one a 15-0 variety to jump the lead to 31-10 with nine minutes to go before halftime. It was tough sledding the rest of the half as NMHU took a 52-22 lead into the locker rooms.

Molina got FLC going to start the second half when he drilled a three a minute in. Otas Iyekekpolor added a dunk off the fastbreak to give the Skyhawks a 5-0 run to start the second stanza.

Three straight long balls followed for NMHU before Beasley ended the run with two from the line. The teams played even the remainder of the game when Will Wittman closed the scoring with a layup with NMHU taking the 104-69 victory.

The Cowboys forced 22 Skyhawk turnovers, mostly off a very aggressive press that started from the opening tip. Gerad Davis led NMHU with 25 points, while Raquan Mitchell added 18, Jordan Jones with 15, DJ Bustos with 14 and Adrian LaFleur tallied 11. The Cowboys went 31-60 (52) from the field, 19-33 (58) from three and 23-25 (92) at the foul line.

FLC will remain on the road tomorrow (Saturday) night when they will play at CSU-Pueblo starting at 7:30 p.m. Adams State defeated the ThunderWolves 86-74 Friday night.
