Five Score in Double-Figures to Lead Women’s Basketball Past Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Similar to the earlier meeting this season, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team built a double-digit halftime lead and won all four quarters on their way to defeated New Mexico Highlands University 88-51 Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

FLC (4-3, 1-1 RMAC) led by three after one and then back by a 22-10 second quarter, took a 15-point lead into the break. The Skyhawks quickly put the game out of reach in the third quarter putting up 31 points.

Alyssa Yocky led the offense with 17 points and seven rebounds, along with two assists and both a block and a steal in 21 minutes. Jordan Carter added 12 points and six rebounds in 15 minutes. Kayla Herrera tallied 11 points and tied with Sydney Candelaria for the high in rebounds with each grabbing eight. Candelaria added 10 points and Tanisha Begay also reached double-figures with 10 points.

The Skyhawks went 29-73 (40) from the field, 5-23 (22) from three and 25-29 (86) from the foul line. FLC held the edge on points off turnovers (19-7), second-chance points (22-8), bench points (35-0), points in the paint (44-24) and fastbreak points (16-7).

Carter opened the scoring 15 seconds in with a jumper. NMHU (2-7, 0-2 RMAC) answered with the next four points to take a 4-2 lead. The Cowgirls led for the final time of the game with 5:34 to play in the first quarter when a Brianna Stewart jumper made it 8-7.

Candelaria tallied a pair of jumpers later in the quarter to push the lead to 16-10 before FLC settled on a 16-13 lead after the first 10 minutes.

NMHU kept the deficit at two at 24-22 midway through the second quarter when FLC began to pull away. Candelaria hit a layup and then Herrera stepped back to drill a three-pointer. The run continued with free throws from both Candelaria and Hanna Valencia to stretch the lead to 33-22.

Yocky converted two from the line and then Begay dialed long distance to close the half to leave FLC with a 38-23 lead at the break.

The lead ballooned out to 20 nearly four minutes into the third quarter off two free throws by Yocky. Valencia moved the Skyhawks to a 56-29 lead on two free throws with 4:40 to play in the third. A Begay layup with a few minutes left had the lead as high as 30 before FLC took a 69-40 lead into the final frame.

FLC blitzed NMHU to start the fourth quarter scoring the first 10 points to open a 39-point lead. Carter started the scoring 37 seconds in with a layup. Candelaria, Carter, Yocky and then Carter again all added baskets to push the lead to 79-40.

Noni Thomas put the lead back to 39 with 46 seconds to play with a layup before the game finished with an 88-51 final score.

Outside of the five scoring in double-figures, Valencia added eight points and eight rebounds and Aubre Fortner chipped in six points.
