Cross Country Opens 2018 Season With Tom Strandt Memorial

DURANGO, Colo. – It had a nice feel to it, with the Fort Lewis College cross country teams getting the chance to stay home and host the Tom Strandt Memorial for the first time since 2013 at the old Fort campus. Rhylyn Jones and Hosava Kretzmann paced both sides of the event to take the individual titles.

On the women's side, Jones sprinted through the course for a time of 20:15, nearly a minutes ahead of the pace. Rose Chemeli was the next one in with a time of 21:01. Dorothy Elder (21:06), Peyton Slack (21:30) and Karla De la Cruz (21:40) rounded out the top-five. Sarah Chacon (21:45) and Jessica Ramirez (21:48) came in sixth and seventh and also clocked times under 22. Rounding out the top-10 was Angel Curley (22:06), Makiah Salzano (22:20) and Madison Obernesser (22:35). Saylor Sargent just missed out on a top-10 result clocking a time of 22:42 to come in 11th. Kiana Chavez (22:45) and Rubie Trotter (22:59) each got in under the 23-minute mark to place 12th and 13, respectively. Krista Benze snagged a time of 23:45 to place in the top-15. Camille Uentillie added a time of 24:27 to come in 15th. Rounding out the results for the Skyhawks was Quinlyn Borneo in 19th with a time of 25:50 and Kennedy Yazzie in 22nd with a time of 29:50.

"With 22 women we have some depth which will be our strength," Head Coach Joshua Coon said. "We have so many strong women, it will be fun to see what they do this year. They will surprise some people. Becca and Carly were held out, they will be focusing on later season races. We raced 11 freshman unattached as we sort out our varsity. The potential is there for sure."
 
On the men's side, Kretzmann won the race by 20 seconds as he snagged a time of 27:18.Bismarck Kipkilach kept pace with his teammate and was the next one in with a time of 27:38. Shawvan Levi grabbed third with a time of 27:47, while Cody Speece made it four straight Skyhawks as he crossed with a time of 28:11. Steven Nez landed in the top-10 placing ninth with a time of 28:34. Several Skyhawks came in right behind him with Andrew Rome crossing with a time of 28:34.5, Andrew Day with a time of 28:35, Sylas Schutt at 28:55, Preston Charlie at 28:56 and then Andrew Vanaman came in 15th with a time of 29:57. Tyler Gibson (30:46) and Kelvin Benally (30:52) came in next in 17th and 18th. Trevor Wilson added a time of 32:27 to land in 23rd, Brandon Sheard posted a time of 32:34 and Derek MacFarlane added a time of 43:00.

"We know what we have, we return our top seven from last year and they are ready. This was mostly a workout for us with some specific objectives," Coon said. "It's a long season and they will be ready to rip when we get them to Griak at the end of the month."
 
On the course at the old Fort campus: "This was a tough course at 7600 feet, true cross country. This was great for us to focus on racing and not on times. The times will come when we focus on racing well."
 
"We hope to grow this in to a local community tradition. The old Fort campus is perfect for hosting and they were generous hosts."
 
Both teams are also ranked in the USTFCCCA South Central Rankings checking in at seventh.
 
FLC will return to action on Friday, Sep. 14 when they will travel to Gunnison to compete in the Western State Colorado University Invitational.
