Men’s Soccer Battles to Tie With #19 Colorado Mesa

DURANGO, Colo. – It would figure with the history between these teams over the past few years that this one would go down to the wire as well. The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team scored a late tying goal by Marshall Metzger and after two hard-fought overtime periods, it remained a 3-3 tie with #19 Colorado Mesa University Friday at Dirks Field to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Last year, these teams went to overtime in both meetings, resulting in a tie and then an overtime winner. This year's version was a second half to remember, with the teams trading chances down the stretch.

It was a perfect start for the Skyhawks (2-0-2, 0-0-1 RMAC) as Coleman Kane got loose in the box after receiving a solid pass from Bar Hazut and buried the first goal just 3:47 in to send FLC out to the 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season.

No long after a rush by the Skyhawks, Colorado Mesa (2-0-2, 0-0-1 RMAC) answered back at the 15:55 mark when James McGhee sent a ball through the middle to Lawan Abary who was able to get just enough space in the box for an in close shot and score to tie the game at one.

That would be all for the remainder of the first half and then the teams really got things going in the second half. After a slow start for both teams, about 10 minutes into the second stanza each team was starting to get quality chances when Abary found himself loose again in the box when Nick Rizzo chipped it over to him for an open look and a goal at the 73:22 mark to give CMU their first lead at 2-1.

We weren't even close to the end of the fireworks at that point. Just over five minutes later, FLC kept the pressure on and drew a penalty in the box which resulted in a penalty kick. Nicolas Perez took the kick and Miguel Alaniz made the save, but as the ball was kicked around, the Mavericks ended up knocking the ball in their own goal to tie the game at two with just over 20 minutes to play.

Before anyone had a chance to recover from the pressure craziness of the last goal, CMU brought a counter attack right into the box and drew their own penalty shot just 20 seconds later. Kevin Del Mazo took the shot for CMU and was successful to push the Mavericks back in front 3-2.

FLC nearly tied it four minutes later when Hakeem Rabiu launched a shot from just outside the right side of the box and hit the left post. With the Skyhawks starting to press with just five minutes to play, Metzger joined the attack from his defensive position and Rabiu was able to slide him a perfect pass on the left side of the box and Metzger chipped a shot just pass the goalkeepers fingers to knot the game at three at the 85:10 mark.

FLC had a couple of more chances over the final few minutes, but it remained tied heading into the first overtime. In the first OT, CMU had a couple of shots, with Ventura Salcido saving the one on net, while FLC had three shots, with one on goal by Ty Lang that was corralled by Alaniz to keep the game even at three heading into the second overtime.

In the second OT, Max Fuentes Carrera took a corner kick just under two minutes in and Robby Baca later got a shot that just went high. There would be a few more chances by Colorado Mesa, with one on net saved by Salcido and then another wide before the teams would end up settling for a 3-3 tie.

FLC held a 21-18 shot advantage, while CMU had a 9-8 edge on goal. FLC had a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks and there were 37 total fouls in the game with FLC committing 19 to 18 for CMU.

Kane and Rabiu paced the offense with four shots apiece. Hazut added three shots, while Landon Gibson, Lang and Raul Pescador each recorded two shots apiece.

Connor Lowdermilk and Del Mazo each had four shots to lead Colorado Mesa. Abary had three shots.

In net, Salcido went all 110 minutes for FLC and made five saves. Alaniz went all 110 minutes for CMU and made five saves as well.

FLC will hit the road this Sunday when they will travel to Alamosa to face Adams State beginning at 3 p.m. The Grizzlies finished in a 1-1 tie with CSU-Pueblo earlier today.
