DURANGO, Colo. – Ryan Lee and Bar Hazut were each getting closer to breaking out over the past few games and they certainly did so Friday. Hazut and Lee scored a goal in each half, while Marshall Metzger added the other to help the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team roll to the 5-2 victory over MSU Denver in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Dirks Field.
FLC (4-0-2, 2-0-1 RMAC) held a strong 16-8 shot advantage and 11-3 on goal. The offensive production started right out of the gate with Metzger scoring in the fifth minute. Before 10 minutes were gone, Hazut added his first goal of the game.
The Skyhawks generated chances right from the start, with Ty Lang and Max Fuentes Carrera taking corner kicks. Following the corner by Fuentes Carrera, Metzger flew into the box and was waiting to knock home the header goal at the 4:46 mark to push FLC to the early 1-0 lead. It was Metzger's second goal of the season.
Not even four minutes later, Lang broke in and sent a perfect pass inside the box to Hazut who chipped it right past the goalie in the corner for the 2-0 lead at the 8:03 mark.
MSU Denver fought back, as a rush into the box from the right side by Jaime Gutierrez helped setup his pass to Bryan Amouyal who knocked home the goal at the 14:07 mark to leave FLC in front 2-1.
FLC kept possession throughout the half and it paid off when Landon Gibson fed a perfect pass up the middle of the field to Lee who broke free and as the keeper came out to challenge, he shot it right into the bottom corner of the goal for a 3-1 lead at the 34:17 mark.
With the game 3-1 at halftime, the second half started just like the game for FLC, as they were on the attack, generating three straight corner kicks. After MSU Denver worked the ball out and were whistled for offside, Hazut found the loose ball in the box after it hit a few defenders and he drilled the shot home past the keeper to move FLC to a 4-1 lead at the 53:41 mark. It was Hazut's fourth goal of the season.
The Roadrunners collected their final goal of the game when a shot in front of the Skyhawk goal was redirected into the net by a FLC defender to make it 4-2 at the 60:35 mark.
Lee capped the scoring for FLC and for the game when Hazut past it up through the field around a couple of defenders and caught Lee in stride who got near the goal and shot it in to provide the final margin of 5-2. It was Lee's fifth goal of the season.
While FLC dominated in shots, they also took eight corner kicks to just one for MSU Denver and each team committed 10 fouls.
Individually, Hazut had four shots, with three on goal. Gibson, Lang, Hakeem Rabiu and Lee added two shots each. Ventura Salcido picked up his fourth win of the season in net as he tallied one save in playing all 90 minutes.
Gutierrez led MSU Denver with three shots, while James Tanner played all 90 minutes in goal and tallied six saves.
FLC will remain at home this coming Sunday when they will host Colorado Christian starting at 12 p.m. at Dirks Field.
