Wedhorn and Christiansen Post Double-Digit Kills for Volleyball at Dixie State

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Haley Christiansen and Tye Wedhorn each powered the offense with 11 kills apiece and despite putting up at least 20 points in each set, Dixie State University was able to hold off the Fort Lewis College volleyball team 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-21) Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Wedhorn had a big game as she had 11 kills to two errors in 16 total chances for a .562 hitting percentage. Kendra Swackenberg led the offense with 33 assists, while on defense Christiansen had 14 digs and Bailey Longacre sent back three blocks with one being solo.

Down 8-6 in the first set, FLC (1-8, 1-4 RMAC) a kill by Longacre helped start a 4-0 run to push the Skyhawks in front. During the run, Longacre added another kill and then two attack errors by Dixie State (10-2, 5-0 RMAC) had FLC looking at a 10-8 lead. Christiansen kept FLC in front at 12-10 with a kill before the Trailblazers went on a 4-0 run to regain the lead. A Swackenberg kill kept the lead at 22-20 for Dixie State before they picked up the final three points to take the set at 25-20.

In set two, Christiansen and Ohiyah Shirley put together back-to-back kills during the middle of the set to even things at 13. FLC fought back to move in front, first at 20-19 on an attack error and then again at 21-20 on a kill by Swackenberg. A Wedhorn kill and an attack error by the Trailblazers moved the Skyhawks to set point at 24-23. Following a timeout by Dixie State, they scored three straight points to take the set at 26-24 and move to a 2-0 match lead.

FLC jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the third set with a Christiansen kill and an attack error. A trio of Wedhorn kills a few points later moved the Skyhawks out to a 6-5 lead. After Dixie State fought back and held the lead for a majority of the set, a service error by the Trailblazers opened the door for a kill by Christiansen and a service ace by Jacalyn Sharko had the set even at 21. Similar to the set before, Dixie State caught fire again, ripping off the final four points of the match to claim the set 25-21 and the match at 3-0.

Megan Treanor led Dixie State with 12 kills, Jordyn Nelson had 28 assists, while on defense, Lauren Gammell had seven blocks and Sid Brandon tallied 18 digs.

FLC held a 41-40 advantage on kills and were close in several other categories including service aces (3-4), assists (37-40) and digs (52-54).

FLC will remain in Utah tomorrow (Saturday) when they will face Westminster in Salt Lake City with game time set for 4 p.m. Adams State defeated Westminster, 3-1, earlier Friday evening.
