Christiansen Posts Double-Double at Westminster

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Haley Christiansen recorded 12 kills and 14 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. The Fort Lewis College volleyball team fought back to win the second set, but Westminster was able to pull out the final two sets to defeat the Skyhawks 3-1 (25-18, 25-27, 25-21, 25-21) Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

This was the second time this teams matched up, as FLC (1-9, 1-5 RMAC) opened the season on August 31 at Westminster in which the Griffins (5-9, 3-3 RMAC) won in five sets. This one almost went down the same way before Westminster was able to pull away in the final two sets.

Christiansen did all she could, both offensively with 12 kills and defensively with 14 digs, but Westminster countered with big offensive performances from Audrey Green and Sydnee Simmons as both tallied 17 kills.

Maddie LeBlanc returned to action for FLC and she led the team in blocks with five. Kendra Swackenberg dished out 20 assists, while Jacalyn Sharko led the way in digs with 16.

Trailing 5-1 in the first set, FLC caught fire to take a 6-5 lead with Christiansen posting a kill around four errors by Westminster. After Westminster moved in front by seven, FLC had one final push with Ohiyah Shirley and Sharko tallying kills, around an error by the Griffins to pull back to within four. Just when the Skyhawks were closing in, Westminster reeled off the final three points of the set to take the first set 25-18.

Bella Valdez opened the second set spinning in a pair of service aces and then LeBlanc and Tye Wedhorn teamed up for a block before LeBlanc ripped a kill and then LeBlanc a solo block to take a 5-1 lead. Westminster looked set to run away ahead 15-10 when another double-block by LeBlanc and Wedhorn helped ignite a 4-0 run. LeBlanc added a kill and after two errors by the Griffins, it was a 15-14 slim lead for the Griffins. FLC regained the lead at 20-19 on a kill by Longacre and again remained in front at 21-20 on a kill by Christiansen. After Westminster fought off set point at 25-24 to even the set at 25, Sharko and Christiansen left no doubt as they recorded back-to-back kills to give FLC the set at 27-25 to even the match at one.

Westminster didn't let the second set bother them, as they came out on fire to start the third set on a 7-0 run prompting a FLC timeout. The Skyhawks kept chipping away and eventually tied the set at 13 when a bad set help start a 5-0 run. Sharko also added a kill during the run. A Christiansen kill and service ace from Shirley moved FLC out to an 18-17 lead. Westminster countered with a 5-0 run to move back ahead at 22-18. The teams then traded the final six points which left Westminster with the 25-21 set win and 2-1 match lead.

Swackenberg and Longacre came away with kills early in the fourth set to help erase a four point deficit to even the set at five. After falling behind by four, FLC fought back to within two at 17-15 with a kill by Shirley and then a double-block from Longacre and Sharko. A pair of Christiansen kills kept the deficit at two at 22-20, but the Griffins were able to post three of the next four points to grab the set at 25-21 and the match at 3-1.

FLC led the way in service aces (6-3) and were close in both blocks (6-10) and digs (78-86).

Outside of the big offensive games from Green and Simmons for the Griffins, Green made it a double-double with 25 digs. Simmons had six blocks and Agatha Roese-Olsen added 47 assists.

FLC will return home to face New Mexico Highlands on Friday at 7 p.m. and then on Saturday against CSU-Pueblo at 5 p.m. with both games inside Whalen Gym.
