Women’s Soccer Battles to The End Against Colorado Christian in One Goal Contest

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Goals were at a premium, as the two teams combined for just five shots on goal. An early shot went in for Colorado Christian University and the goal held up as the Cougars claimed the 1-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Trailblazer Field.

Colorado Christian (4-4-2, 3-3 RMAC) held an 8-5 advantage on shots, including 3-2 on goal. Fort Lewis (4-4-1, 3-2 RMAC) had all four corner kicks in the game and it was a physical contest with 32 fouls called, with 17 on the Cougars.

The Skyhawks generated some offense just over 12 minutes in when Courtney Wamboldt launched a shot just wide. Later Emma Patron had a pair of corner kicks, but FLC just missed on a few chances in front.

Kaylee Mickens came up big in net right after that as Colorado Christian fired a pair of shots within 16 seconds, but Mickens made both saves. In the 19th minute, the Cougars kept pushing and on a throw-in, Karli Wilson took the pass and lobbed a shot just over Mickens for the goal and a 1-0 lead.

FLC brought the intensity right after that when Patron took a shot that was blocked, which eventually led to a pair of corner kicks that again just missed.

Britney Johnson nearly even things up in the 29th minute when her shot was saved by Ireland VanDyke. Neither team was able to generate a shot the rest of the half until a Cougar shot in the last minute was blocked leaving the game 1-0 at the half.

After an early shot that missed by the Cougars, the teams exchanged multiple fouls until the 76th minute when Colorado Christian launched a shot high. Two minutes later, Wamboldt just missed on a chance that went wide.

In the 81st minute, Renee Terrell fired a shot on goal that was saved by VanDyke to keep it a 1-0 game. The Skyhawks kept pushing, but weren't able to tally anymore shots with Colorado Christian collecting the 1-0 win.

Wamboldt led the way with two shots, while Terrell, Johnson and Patron added a shot apiece. In net, Mickens played all 90 minutes all tallied two saves.

Stephanie Muchow paced the Cougars with two shots. VanDyke went all 90 minutes in net for Colorado Christian and made a pair of saves.

FLC will now return home to play a pair of games at Dirks Field starting Friday at 1 p.m. against UC-Colorado Springs. They will close the weekend on Sunday at noon against MSU Denver.
