Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Bar Hazut broke through midway through the first half and after Northwest Nazarene picked up a late tally in the first half off of a penalty kick goal, Ventura Salcido came through in the clutch in net, as he recorded a couple of big saves in the final seconds to help the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie Thursday afternoon.
The two teams played an even game throughout the afternoon, as FLC held a 12-10 edge on shots and 6-5 advantage on shots on goal. Each team attempted six corner kicks, while Northwest Nazarene had seven fouls to four for FLC. The game featured six yellow cards and one red card.
After nearly breaking through on a few other strong rushes, Hazut was able to find the back of the net just over 28 minutes in when he took a pass from Coleman Kane and delivered his first goal of the season and a 1-0 FLC lead.
Following another scoring opportunity a few minutes later, the teams would battle at midfield before a late foul call in the box on the Skyhawks gave Northwest Nazarene a penalty kick in which Alex Mitrovic converted to tie the game in the final minute of the first half.
Near the midway point of the second half, Ty Lang and Hakeem Rabiu each had shots on goal, but Colin Andersen snagged both shots. Hazut nearly made it a two-goal game, as he had a shot in the last four minutes of regulation, but Andersen made the save to send the match into overtime.
FLC generated all the pressure in the first overtime, with Robby Baca coming close in the final three minutes, but his shot sailed high to move the match into double overtime. In the second OT, Baca and Rabiu each had early shots, but one went wide and the other high.
The Skyhawks almost won the game, but an offside call negated a great scoring chance in the final minute. Right after that call, the Nighthawks nearly grabbed the win as they fired a pair of shots in from close range against Salcido and he was up to the challenge turning back both attempts to leave the game tied at 1-1 after 110 minutes of action.
Hazut paced the Skyhawks with four shots, two on goal. Rabiu, Baca and Raul Pescador each added two shots apiece. Salcido went all 110 minutes in net and added four saves.
Mitrovic led the Nighthawks with three shots and two on goal. Andersen went all 110 minutes in net with five saves.
FLC will now return to Durango for the home opener this Saturday at 1 p.m. against Eastern New Mexico at Dirks Field.
