Wamboldt Sends Women’s Soccer to Win in Final Minute Over Greyhounds

DURANGO, Colo. – Courtney Wamboldt certainly had a game to remember. After helping setup the first goal of the game to Skylar Byrnes, she later ended the game in the final seconds with a perfectly placed corner kick that sent the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Eastern New Mexico University on Friday afternoon at Dirks Field.

It was a dominant offensive display for FLC (1-1-1) as they took 19 shots, constantly pressuring ENMU (0-1-1) throughout the second half. Both teams ended up with six shots apiece on goal. The Skyhawks had five corner kicks to three for ENMU and the foul count was 11 for FLC to 6 for the Greyhounds.

Both teams had a few chances in the first half, but the game remained scoreless into the second half. The Skyhawks started out the second half strong, getting multiple chances before Byrnes got loose in the box. After a wild scramble, Wamboldt found her in front for the goal and a 1-0 FLC lead near the 70 minute mark of the game.

ENMU countered and had a few attempts that were turned back by Britt Blomso, but a key foul called on FLC gave ENMU a free kick. Following a yellow card, Bailey Bosley took the kick for the Greyhounds near midfield and hit a perfect shot that went right into the top right corner of the net to even the game at 1-1 with 20 minutes to play.

It appeared the game was headed for overtime when FLC generated a late push that resulted in a corner kick. Wamboldt had to hurry with time ticking down as she took the corner with under 30 seconds to play, her shot was perfect as it curved right into the net for what would be the game-winning goal with just 18 seconds to play.

Renee Terrell led FLC with four shots, while Britney Johnson had three shots, with one on goal. Katie Smith added two shots, with one on goal. As it turned out, the only shots that both Byrnes and Wamboldt attempted, ended up resulting in goals.

Bosley, the goal-scorer for ENMU had two shots to lead the team.

Blomso went all 90 minutes in net for FLC, she made five saves to earn her first win of the season. ENMU used two goalies, as Taylor Jackson started and played the first 45 minutes, making one save. Kirsten Lane went the entire second half and had three saves, while allowing two goals.

FLC will remain at home this Sunday when they host West Texas A&M starting at 1 p.m. at Dirks Field.
