Beasley, Iyekekpolor Combine for 40 to Lift Men’s Basketball Past Mountaineers

DURANGO, Colo. – Marquel Beasley had another solid night tallying 22 points, while Otas Iyekekpolor provided a big spark with a couple of dunks in both the first and second half to go along with his 18 points to help lead the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to a 72-63 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Western Colorado Friday night inside Whalen Gym.

Iyekekpolor delivered a pair of big dunks to help send FLC (8-8, 3-7 RMAC) to the win. In the first half near the midway point off a missed free throw, Iyekekpolor soared in to grab the rebound and collect the dunk. His second half dunk came off an offensive rebound where he eluded a pair of defenders to collect the rebound and put down the dunk. The second one helped keep the Skyhawks with a nine-point lead and eventually grab the victory.
In addition to the big games from Beasley and Iyekekpolor, AJ Sparks went for 11 points and Alex Semadeni added 11.

It was a tough start to the game for the Skyhawks, as after pulling to within one on two different occasions, WCU (3-13, 0-10 RMAC) jumped out to a 19-6 lead at the 12:37 mark. Still down nine with 9:35 left in the first half, Iyekekpolor's dunk helped spark an 11-0 run that left FLC in the lead. Iyekekpolor added a jumper, Beasley hit two from the line, Wyatt Hayes hit a tough layup in the paint and after an Iyekekpolor free throw tied the game, a Hayes steal and fastbreak layup had FLC with the 26-24 lead with 6:36 to go before halftime.

The lead got as high as five with three minutes to go on a layup by Semadeni and after a run by WCU, FLC went into halftime holding a 35-34 lead.

The Mountaineers came out strong to start the second half, moving their lead out to six over the first two-plus minutes. Iyekekpolor then put together five straight points, first with a three and the two from the line to tie the game before back-to-back three-pointers from Semadeni and Sparks had the lead out to six at the 12:33 mark.

The lead reached 10 at the 8:38 mark on a layup by Beasley and following a run by Western Colorado, Iyekekpolor's second big dunk helped keep the lead at nine and FLC never looked back.

FLC went 25-52 (48) from the field, 5-15 (33) from three and 17-24 (71) at the foul line. The Skyhawks forced 20 turnovers which led to a 28-10 points off turnovers advantage. FLC also led in points in the paint (32-14) and in fastbreak (4-2).

Four Mountaineers scored in double-figures led by 16 from Monroe Porter. Joran Ticeson added 14 and both Brady Subart and Cole Sienknecht chipped in 13 apiece. Porter finished with a double-double adding 10 rebounds. WCU went 19-54 (35) from the field, 11-29 (38) from three and 14-18 (78) at the foul line.

FLC will remain at home tomorrow (Saturday) night when they will face Colorado Mesa starting at 7:30 p.m. The Mavericks held on for a 79-74 victory at Adams State earlier on Friday.
