Valencia Provides Spark Off Bench With 14 Points Against #23 Colorado Mesa

DURANGO, Colo. – Hanna Valencia scored a career-high 14 points in 19 minutes on the floor to help keep the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team close against #23 Colorado Mesa. The game went right down to the end before a late run by the Mavericks provided the difference as Colorado Mesa claimed the 61-52 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday night inside Whalen Gym.

Valencia went a perfect 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from three-point range, while also sinking 6-7 at the charity stripe. She added a rebound and an assist. In addition to her big game, Jordan Carter tallied 12 points, Sydney Candelaria tallied nine points and Alyssa Yocky just missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.

Carter scored the first points 52 seconds in with a layup off a steal by Kayla Herrera. Trailing 9-8, FLC (7-10, 3-8 RMAC) finished the final four minutes of the opening quarter on a 6-0 run. Carter started the run with a free throw and after a Herrera jumper in the paint, Candelaria closed the run with a three-pointer to give the Skyhawks a 14-9 lead.

CMU (14-1, 11-0 RMAC) used a pair of back-to-back three-pointers over the first two minutes of the second quarter to pull back in front by one. Carter and Valencia added layups near the midway point of the quarter to push FLC back out to a three-point lead.

Free throws from Valencia and Aubre Fortner with a couple of minutes left in the half pushed FLC out to a 28-24 lead. Karina Brandon tallied the final four points of the half for the Mavericks to leave the game tied at 28 at the break.

The third quarter wouldn't see much separation between the teams, as the largest lead from either side would be three for the Mavericks. FLC fought back to tie and take a 41-40 lead on free throws from Herrera and Yocky. Following four free throws by Colorado Mesa, Valencia would convert three straight foul shots to tie the game at 44 before Jaylyn Duran closed the quarter with a mid-range jumper for the 46-44 lead entering the final frame.

After a three-pointer by Duran 47 seconds into the fourth, the teams wouldn't score for almost four minutes until a Candelaria triple cut the deficit back to two. A Carter jumper on the next trip down tied the game at 49 with 4:40 to play.

A big 6-0 run followed for Colorado Mesa to take a 55-49 lead with just two minutes to play. Still down seven with 1:37 to play, a Carter jumper in the paint off the fastbreak trimmed the deficit back to five. The Mavericks were able to seal the win down the stretch going 4-for-4 from the foul line to claim the victory.

FLC went 16-42 (38) from the field, 4-14 (29) from three and 16-27 (59) from the foul line. The Skyhawks held the advantage on second-chance points (10-5), bench points (18-7) and points in the paint (22-20).

Duran, one of the top scorers in the conference, led the way for Colorado Mesa with 26 points. Kylyn Rigsby added nine and Brandon with eight. CMU went 20-49 (41) from the field, 7-25 (28) from three and 14-18 (78) at the foul line.

FLC will now travel to Denver this coming week to face Regis Friday night and Colorado Christian on Saturday, with both games starting at 5:30 p.m.
