Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brian Kortz

Late Rally Falls Just Short for Men’s Basketball at Roadrunners

DENVER, Colo. – Down 17 with just over four minutes to play, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team came surging back to make MSU Denver sweat down the stretch. The Skyhawks pulled back to within six with a minute left and nearly made it a one possession game before the Roadrunners claimed the 77-67 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday night inside the Auraria Event Center.

FLC (6-6, 1-5 RMAC) had a difficult task ahead of them, facing a 17-point deficit with just over four minutes to play in the game. Marquel Beasley helped start the run back into the game with a free throw. He then hit a jumper in the paint while being fouled and promptly completed the three-point-play to trim the deficit to 13. Following a free throw by MSU Denver (6-4, 4-2 RMAC), Alex Semadeni hit two from the line and after Kireed Johnson drilled a three from the wing off an assist by Cesar Molina, it was just a nine-point deficit with 2:38 to play.

Two free throws by the Roadrunners had the lead back into double-digits, just to watch Molina sink a jumper in the paint and Otas Iyekekpolor pull of a terrific pump-fake at the top-of-the-key and drove in for a layup and one. He added the foul shot leaving MSU Denver with a 73-67 lead with 1:09 to play.

The defense forced a missed three giving FLC a chance to get to within one possession, but a pair of missed three-pointers down the stretch and four free throws by the Roadrunners sealed the win.

Trailing 5-2 early on, FLC grabbed their first lead of the game after Johnson hit three free throws and Iyekekpolor drilled a jumper for the 7-5 lead. A Keven Biggs three-pointer a few minutes later pushed the lead to 10-8.

MSU Denver then took control taking an 11-point lead, but FLC came charging back before the break. Beasley closed the half with four straight points, hitting two from the charity stripe and then picked up a steal and fastbreak layup leaving the Roadrunners with just a 45-41 lead at halftime.

Beasley continued the run right in to the second half hitting a jumper 24 seconds in. The Roadrunners then seized control of the game again going on a 14-0 run to open a 59-43 lead with 14:39 to play. A jumper by Iyekekpolor at the 8:52 mark brought FLC back to within 10 before MSU Denver went back in front by 17 setting up the near late rally by the Skyhawks.

Beasley led three Skyhawks in double-figures with 22 points, going 7-17 from the field, 8-10 from the foul line and added seven rebounds and a steal. Iyekekpolor added 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal and Johnson rounded out the three in double-figures with 11 points, connecting on two three-pointers. FLC went 23-64 (36) from the field, 4-23 (17) from three and 17-27 (63) from the foul line.

FLC led on points off turnovers (17-7), tied in second-chance points (9-9), led in bench points (21-19), while MSU Denver led in points in the paint (30-22) and fastbreak points (8-6).

Garrett Carter and Druce Asah paced four Roadrunners in double-figures scoring 18 points apiece. Kendall McIntosh added 13 points and Jaryn Taylor tallied 12 points. MSU Denver went 25-49 (51) from the field, 7-15 (47) from three and 20-29 (69) from the foul line.

FLC will close the road trip tomorrow (Saturday) when they will play at Chadron State starting at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles collected a 93-86 win over Adams State earlier on Friday for their fourth conference win of the season.
