Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brian Kortz

Women’s Basketball Plays Nail-Biter at Eagles

CHADRON, Neb. – With both teams having a chance to win the game down the stretch, it certainly became a nail-biter. The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team took a late lead, but Chadron State fought back and held on for the 66-65 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday night inside Chicoine Center.

FLC (6-7, 2-5 RMAC) pushed in front with 1:14 left when Jordan Carter hit a layup off an assist by Kayla Herrera. Jessica Harvey answered for Chadron State (3-10, 2-5 RMAC) as she hit two from the line leaving it a one-point game with a minute to play. Two missed free throws by FLC on the next trip down the floor opened the door for the Eagles and a big offensive rebound led to a Harvey jumper just outside the paint to push the Eagles to a 66-65 lead with 25 seconds to play.

After a five-second call turnover on the in-bounds by FLC, Chadron State had a chance to add to their lead, but a turnover on the in-bounds pass gave the Skyhawks the ball back with 10 seconds to play. FLC had three shots at the win, but a pair of jumpers just spun out and a last-second shot at the buzzer was blocked to send Chadron State to the victory.

Early on, the Skyhawks were trailing by four with just over two minutes to play in the opening quarter when Kelsey Wainright helped spark a quick 5-0 run to give FLC the lead with her jumper. Kaitlyn Romero then added a three-pointer for the 9-7 lead.

A pair of free throws by Hanna Valencia closed the quarter to give FLC a 11-9 lead through the first 10 minutes.

The Skyhawks scored the first six points of the second quarter, with a jumper by Valencia, a layup by Aubre Fortner and then a jumper by Sydney Candelaria had FLC with a 17-9 lead.

Chadron State fought back with a 11-3 run to tie the game at 20 with 4:18 to go before halftime. A Valencia three and a jumper by Candelaria had the lead back to eight before Chadron State closed the half with a pair from the line to keep the Skyhawks with a 30-24 lead at halftime.

Herrera hit a couple of threes in the third quarter to keep FLC with a four-point lead. The teams would trade leads the remainder of the quarter before a pair of free throws by Candelaria left FLC down just one entering the final quarter.

FLC broke open a 52-all tie in the fourth quarter when a Romero jumper helped ignite a quick 7-0 run. Romero added a three-pointer on the next trip down the floor and then Alyssa Yocky closed the run with a layup off the fastbreak for a 59-52 lead.

The Skyhawks held the lead all the way until a jumper by Harvey at the 2:53 mark tied the game at 62 setting up the wild finish.

Candelaria led FLC with 17 points, Herrera added 16 with four three-pointers and Romero posted 13 points. Yocky brought down a team-high 15 rebounds. FLC shot 34 percent (21-62) from the field, 8-21 (38) from three and 15-19 (79) at the foul line.

The Skyhawks held the edge on points off turnovers (24-17) and tied in second-chance points (8-8).

Taryn Foxen led Chadron State with 27 points, going 11-16 from the field. Harvey added 13 points and Angelique Gall chipped in 10 points. The Eagles went 26-58 (45) from the field, 3-9 (33) from three and 11-13 (85) at the foul line.

FLC will return home this coming Friday to open a four-game homestand beginning with UC-Colorado Springs at 5:30 p.m. inside Whalen Gym.
