FLC falls 2-0 on the road to UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team suffered just its second loss of the season on Friday, falling by the final score of 2-0 on the road against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

"We started off alright, but made an error in the back that put us in a hole that was pretty similar to last Sunday (4-1 loss to Dixie State)," said Fort Lewis head coach, David Oberholtzer. "That was really the case today. We made two mental errors that led to goals for UCCS. We certainly played our role in creating those opportunities for them and they did a good job of making it difficult for us."

It was a near-even shots battle between the two RMAC foes as UCCS (3-6-1 overall, 2-5-0 RMAC) narrowly edged the Skyhawks (6-2-3, 3-2-1 RMAC) in the shots column, 14-13.

The Mountain Lions were able to capitalize on an early goal by Adam Baldwin in the seventh minute to take an early lead, then added their insurance goal in the 61st minute to seal the 2-0 final.

The Skyhawks produced two shots on goal, courtesy of junior forward Ryan Lee and junior midfielder Max Fuentes Carrera, but were unable to generate the quality scoring the chances with the abscene of redshirt sophomore Loic Jean-Baptiste, who had to sit out Friday's contest due to a pair of yellow cards against Dixie State.

"Obviously, having Loic out was huge. He's a player who helps calm things down and the way UCCS plays, they are very high-paced and in your face. They bring a frantic tempo to the game, which is not what we want," Oberholtzer said. "Playing that way plays into their hands. We had some good moments that didn't materialize, but not enough of them."

In net, redshirt sophomore Peter Byrne made five saves on his seven chances.

The Skyhawks will look to rebound Sunday when they travel to Denver for a 3 p.m. matchup against Regis University.

"We'll chat (Saturday) and hit the reset button. We'll move on to what's next and what's next for us is Regis," Oberholtzer said. "We need to get back to some fundamental things. Sometimes guys can overthink things and start worrying about other things outside their own responsibilities. That'll be the main thing for us, just everyone refocusing on themselves and controlling the things they are responsible for."
