Skyhaks fall on the road to CSU-Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team opened its mini two-game road swing Friday night against Colorado State University-Pueblo, falling by set scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 27-25 to the Thunderwolves.

"It was just disappointment," said Fort Lewis head coach, Tricia Melfy. "We tired three different outside hitters and just struggled and I think that makes our middles press a little bit. We just passed the error baton, which was unfortunate. We haven't been real focused and paying attention to the details."

The Skyhawks (5-11 overall, 1-6 RMAC) were halted by a slow start, falling behind 12-7 in the first set and were relegated to playing catch up most of the evening.

A bright spot for Fort Lewis was the play of junior right-side hitter Alexa Treguboff, who led the team with eight kills and 12 digs. The Peoria, Arizona native added a block assist and service ace, as well.

"I'm honestly so proud of Alexa. She's been such a great leader and very consistent," Melfy said. "She plays her position well and was able to find some holes in the block. All in all, she's done a great job for us and has pretty much been our most consistent player."

Senior middle blocker Bailey Longacre followed with six kills, while freshman Payton Harmann added five kills to go with her 24 assists and eight digs.

Fort Lewis will look to shake off Friday's loss and get off to a strong start in Saturday's 6 p.m. matchup against New Mexico Highlands University.

"We need to have success early. We've literally been blowing it in the first 10 points of sets and set the tone of the match early that we're in trouble," Melfy said. "I think if we can get ahead (Saturday) in the first 10 points that might fuel some confidence going forward. Setting a tone early in a positive direction might help us get over this hump."
