Skyhawks edged by Griffins to open home stand

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team opened up a four-game home stand on Friday, dropping a tough 1-0 contest against Westminster College on a windy afternoon at Dirks Field.

"At the end of the day, we just lost to a team that played better than us," said Fort Lewis head coach, Damian Clarke. "We're still in the school of hard knocks right now, but our kids are working their butts off and we're making progress. I know most people don't believe there is progress without results, but I know where we were last year and what we are now. It's different."

Fort Lewis (3-6-2 overall, 2-4-2 RMAC) and the visiting Griffins (8-3-2 overall, 5-3-1 RMAC) played a scoreless first half dominated by the defenses, with the two teams combining for three shots on goal.

The Skyhawks nearly took the early advantage when senior forward Bailey Webster settled a ball in the box and fired a shot on goal at the 25:36, but she had her prime scoring chance pushed away by Westminster goalkeeper Hillary Weixler.

In the second half, play began to open up, with Westminster taking advantage of the back-and-forth action as the Griffins produced 11 shots, nine of them on goal, to the Skyhawks' three shots.

"(Westminster) was a little more composed than we were in the second half to find shots and get shots off," Clarke said. "We did a pretty good job of making the game go back and fourth and creating opportunities. Right now, we're just not connecting enough passes to give us a few more chances."

Freshman goalkeeper Katherine Dunbabin got the nod to start the second half after senior Britt Blomso stopped her lone opportunity through the first 45 minutes.

Dunbabin was specular in net, stopping eight of the nine shots she faced until the Griffins broke through for the lone goal of the game at the 65:44 mark.

"Both our goalkeepers were fantastic again and Katie keeps coming into really tough, difficult situations," Clarke said. "She's going to develop into a very, very good goalkeeper with as she's dealt with as a freshman."

Fort Lewis nearly netted the equalizer 13 minutes after Westminster took the lead as a ball served into the Griffins' box was headed by their own defender off the crossbar. The rebound rolled free to FLC freshman Ashley Strader, who was able to get a touch on the ball but had her potential game-tying shot snuffed out by Weixler.

"Ashley got on the end of it, but she ended up getting tackled by the goalkeeper and just wasn't able to get that shot on goal," Clarke said. "We're creating dangerous chances and giving ourselves a chance to get in there and win a game."

The Skyhawks will look to bounce back Sunday when they continue their home stand with a 1 p.m. matchup against Dixie State University (6-3-3 overall, 4-2-2 RMAC).

"Dixie State is an absolute handful. Obviously, teams that are getting ready to go DI are usually prepared to do it," Clarke said. "It'll be a tall task. We're going to have to better on Sunday than we were today and continue to have the correct mentality to fight hard."
