Skyhawks record their sixth shutout in 1-0 victory over Westminster to begin Homecoming Weekend

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team continued to show it will be a force to reckon with inside the RMAC this season as the Skyhawks remained unbeaten and handed Westminster College its first conference loss of the season Friday afternoon at Dirks Field.

Fort Lewis (6-0-3 overall, 4-0-1 RMAC) climbed up into second place in the RMAC standings with the victory and opened up a crucial Homecoming Weekend slate of games with three big points against the visiting Griffins (6-3 overall, 4-1 RMAC).

"This was a huge test and we were up to the task," said Fort Lewis head coach, David Oberholtzer. "I was really impressed and proud of the guys, especially during those first 45 minutes. I thought we were fantastic. That was our best run of play all season."

The Skyhawks' dominated the first-half action, posting a 4-1 shots advantage in the early going and taking a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when redshirt sophomore Loic Jean-Baptiste muscle his way into the box and beat the Westminster goalkeeper for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

For Jean-Baptiste, the score was his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

"It was a great goal and effort by him, but also very standard for him, as well" said Oberholtzer of Jean-Baptiste.

The Skyhawks would have to withstand a flurry from the Griffins in the second half and their defense would again respond with their sixth shutout of the season.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Peter Byrne, the RMAC leader in goals against average (.516), save percentage (.891) and shutouts (6), continued his sensational start to 2019 in net with four saves.

As good as Byrne was, it'd be a save by senior defenseman Ty Lang that saved the day for the Skyhawks.

With 9:21 remaining, Westminster's Max Bringman fire a shot that appeared destined for the top-left corner of the net, but was denied by a Lang as the team co-captain leaped and was able to safely clear the shot with a header.

"I think 30 seconds before he cleared it off the line, Ty was in the other team's box attacking. He just covers so much ground," Oberholtzer said of Lang. "He was positionally in a good spot. We talked about, when the keeper comes out, where we want to be positioned, and he was in the right spot and made a great play."

As a team, Fort Lewis won the shots battle against the Griffins, 11-7, and also owned a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Skyhawks will look to close out Homecoming Weekend with another win at 2:30 p.m. Sunday when they host Dixie State University.

Sunday's game will feature a VIP area for fans that will include food, as well as drinks provided by A&L Coors and Durango Coca Cola. General Admission is $5 while tickets for the VIP area will be on sale for $10.
