FLC men's soccer suffers first loss of the season to Dixie State

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team wrapped up Homecoming weekend on Sunday with an unusual, yellow-card littered matinee against Dixie State University, falling 4-1 to the visiting Trailblazers.

A total of eight cards were given out Sunday and the two conference foes combined for 24 fouls. Adding to Sunday's madness was two penalty kick opportunities for Dixie State (5-4-1 overall, 4-2 RMAC), the first coming just 44 seconds into the game that spotted the Trailblazers an early 1-0 advantage.

"I've never been a part of a game as odd as what we just experienced," said Fort Lewis head coach, David Oberholtzer. "We were put in a hole pretty early on that was difficult to recover from, but I think we could have done a better job of not letting our emotions get the best of us. But what I talked to the guys about and was super proud of was, even though we felt like everything was up against us from 40 seconds in, there was still no quit and there was still a togetherness with the group, fight in the group, and a will and desire to push forward…I can't say it enough; that was a bizarre Sunday afternoon."

The first-minute goal from DSU's Guglielmo Bianchi put the previously unbeaten Skyhawks (6-1-3 overall, 4-1-1 RMAC) behind the 8-ball early. Dixie State would capitalized on the momentum shift, adding two more scores in the 11th minute and 38th minute, respectively, to take a 3-0 lead into the half despite FLC's 11-7 shots advantage.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Skyhawks were again on the short-end of a questionable foul call in their box, resulting in another penalty kick opportunity and goal for DSU's John Joseph at the 54:31 mark.

Fort Lewis, which finished with a 21-14 shots advantage on Sunday, was finally rewarded for its hard work in the Trailblazers' half in the 63rd minute. Junior forward Ryan Lee received a pass in stride from fellow junior Brantley Bice and was able to chip a shot over a charging DSU goalkeeper to put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard.

For Lee, who led all players with a game-high six shots on Sunday, the goal was his fourth of the season, tying him with redshirt sophomore Loic Jean-Baptiste for the team lead.
Some additional bright sports for FLC was the play of redshirt junior Hakeem Rabiu and redshirt sophomore Devon Baird as each of them were active on the offensive end of the field, finishing with three shots apiece.

"Devon is an awesome teammate. He is typically a center back, but he's extremely good in the air and obviously has some great size to him," said Oberholtzer of the 6'4, 195-pound defenseman. "He was able to go and challenge and be brave for a lot of things and make some things happen."

Up next for the Skyhawks will be a four-game road swing, starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they take on the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Oberholtzer said he was pleased with the Skyhawks' effort and fight on Sunday and is confident the team will be able to shake it off and regroup as they head into next week.

"I think the biggest takeaway for us is a lesson learned in controlling what we can control," Oberholtzer said. "This is a group that is extremely resilient, that doesn't quit and is very together. Whether that's coming in a win; that's an easy time to be together and to be resilient. But facing what we had to face today and still be resilient, that's the real test. I'm super proud of us to be challenged in that way and still step up to the challenge and stay together as a group."
