Skyhawks finish home stand 1-1 after loss to CSU-Pueblo on Senior Night

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team closed out its home schedule on Saturday, dropping a tight three-set match (25-21, 26-24 and 25-22) against Colorado State University-Pueblo inside Whalen Gymnasium.

Fort Lewis (10-16 overall, 6-11 RMAC), coming off a four-set victory over New Mexico Highlands on Friday evening, were unable to feed off the energy of Senior Night.

"If you look at the stats, I don't think CSU-Pueblo was all that outstanding (Saturday), but we did just enough to keep losing. We beat ourselves tonight," said Fort Lewis head coach, Tricia Melfy. "Pueblo did a nice job, but I just feel like it was ourselves. We didn't have the right energy, right effort or right numbers."

With only nine points separating the two teams on the evening, the small margin for error showed up on the offensive end as CSU-Pueblo (13-13 overall, 10-7 RMAC) finished with 41 kills versus 17 errors (.203 attack percentage), while the Skyhawks ended the evening with 36 kills and 23 errors (.101).

Playing in their final match inside Whalen Gymnasium, FLC seniors Bailey Longacre and Ohiyah Shirley each tallied nine kills apiece to lead all players, while sophomore middle blocker Tye Wedhorn and junior outside hitter Alexa Treguboff each added five kills.

Defensively, the Skyhawks produced 52 digs and six total blocks; a final number that came in surprisingly low given FLC's activity and aggressiveness much of the evening.

"It's always the plan to be more aggressive at the net. We're a much better blocking team than we've put up this year. We're just a little off," Melfy said. "I liked that we were more aggressive, and we got our hands a lot of balls tonight and didn't roll our way at times during those long rallies where we blocked three or four (attacks)."

Shirley was one kill shy of a double-double as she paced all Skyhawks with 11 digs, joined in double-figures by freshman libero Kamryn Lopez with 10.

Freshman setter Payton Harmann added nine digs to go with her 30 assists.

Senior right-side hitter Audrey Stansberry before well in her first-set action, finishing with two kills, a solo block and a dig.

Stansberry, alongside Shirley and Longacre, are a trio that Melfy said the program will greatly miss when they graduate from Fort Lewis this spring.

"They are huge catalysts in turning this program around," Melfy said of the three graduating seniors. "Ohiyah, Bailey and Audrey are, if you could get to know them in the locker room and as young women, the execution is pretty good on their part but they are truly the kind of kids we need to bring in. They're not replaceable, but I've got to bring in more kids like them to keep moving us in the right direction."

The Skyhawks will now turn their attention toward their 2019 regular season finale, scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday on the road against Adams State University.

FLC defeated the Grizzlies in five sets when the two teams met back on Oct. 15 in Durango.

"We've got to go out with a bang and lay it all out on the line," Melfy said. "Obviously, we'd have liked to have done that tonight. But at the end of the day, we have one more and that one more needs to be wanting to end on a win, end on a high note. We want to have a really clean, aggressive volleyball match so that's what we remember…If we can finish with a big, powerful victory I think that sends our seniors off on a great note and sends a message of what we're going to do next year."
