Skyhawks fall in four sets on the road to Western Colorado

GUNNISON, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball suffered a tight four-set loss on the road Saturday to Western Colorado University, falling by set scores of 22-25, 19-25, 25-22 and 22-25.

Junior outside hitter Chandler Karr, a Paola, Kansas native and  transfer from Neosho County Community College, produced a career-high 12 kills on Saturday, topping her previous high of 11 set on Sept. 21 against Chadron State College.

Karr added to her strong performance with 16 digs to notch her second career double-double.

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks (9-15 overall, 5-10 RMAC) , they struggled to put the ball down consistently on Saturday, finishing the afternoon with 44 kills and 34 attack errors.
The Mountaineers (10-13 overall, 6-9 RMAC) also faced tough sledding on offense, finishing with 47 kills and 24 attack errors, as the FLC defensive effort – 89 total digs and seven blocks — kept the Skyhawks within striking distance.

After WCU took the first two sets 25-22 and 25-19, FLC responded back with a 25-22 win in Set Three, creating separation thanks to a 7-2 run that ballooned a 12-10 lead into a 19-12 advantage.

The Skyhawks continued to ride the momentum early in Set Four, doubling up the Mountaineers at 6-3, and holding a late 22-21 lead following a WCU attack error.
Western Colorado denied FLC the chance to go to a fifth set, where the Skyhawks are 6-1 this season, by rattling off the final four points of the set to win 25-22 and seal the 3-1 victory.

Karr was the lone Skyhawk with double-figure kills, while sophomore middle blocker Tye Wedhorn finished with nine kills and two solo blocks, junior outside hitter Alexa Treguboff tallied eight kills, and senior middle Bailey Longacre added seven kills and two solo blocks.

Treguboff was one of four Skyhawks to finish with 10 or more digs, popping up 16 digs, while freshman setter Payton Harmann added 10 digs with her 33 assists. Freshman libero Kamryn Lopez led all Skyhawks with 27 digs; her second highest output this season.

Fort Lewis will look to bounce back Friday when it begins its final home stand of 2019 with matchups against New Mexico Highlands University (7 p.m. Friday) and its Senior Day match against Colorado State University-Pueblo (5:30 p.m. Saturday).
The Skyhawks then conclude the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15 on the road against Adams State University.
