Skyhawks upend University of the Southwest to conclude non-conference schedule

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team wrapped up its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, rolling to an uncontested 87-35 victory over the University of the Southwest to begin Thanksgiving Break.

Fort Lewis (4-1 overall) had 11 different players score and four in double-figures, while dominating every major offensive category; points in the paint (58-12), points off turnovers (25-5), second chance points (19-1) and bench points (44-17).

As a team, the Skyhawks shot 44% for the game (36-of-82), with 27 assists on the 36 made field goals.

"The biggest thing that sticks out to me is just sharing the ball," said Fort Lewis head women's basketball coach, Orlando Griego. "We've done a really good job the last two games of sharing the ball, getting a lot of people involved and having a solid scoring balance."

Leading the way offensively for the Skyhawks was freshman forward Jordan Vasquez with her first career double-double, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds on 6-of-11 shooting.

Vasquez also added three steals in her 17 minutes off the bench as she continues to shine in her sixth-man role, leading the Skyhawks in scoring through five games (11.8 points) and ranking second on the team in rebounding (7.0).

"Jordan has played great, offensively and defensively, and she brings a lot of toughness coming off the bench," Griego said. "How aggressive she is on the court is really nice to have and we (coaching staff) and her teammates are pushing her to get better. It's a credit to her to wanting to be a better player and wanting to win."

Joining Vasquez in double-figures on Tuesday were juniors Sydney Candelaria and Bailey Osmer with 14 points and 12 points, respectively, while junior forward Jordan Carter added 10 points and seven rebounds.

For Candelaria, who added five rebounds, three assists and no turnovers in the win, the 14 points were a season-high and second straight game in double-figures after a short two-game slump where she combined for six points against Eastern New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands.

Junior guard Katrina Chandler would chip in eight points and a team-high six assists. Her fellow backcourt mate Kayla Herrera-Flores shook off a tough 2-for-11 shooting night to lead all players with 13 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive end of the floor.

"It's very frustrating when your shots don't fall, but anyway to pick up the team and get the win is our ultimate end goal," Herrera-Flores said.

Fort Lewis will now look to rest up and prepare for the start of RMAC play, which gets underway Friday, December 6 at home against New Mexico Highlands University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

The Skyhawks defeated the Cowgirls in a non-conference matchup, 77-48, back on Nov. 15 on Nike N7 Night.

"Even though we only allowed 35 points (Tuesday), there were some defensive assignments that we missed and we kind of put in some new schemes late last week and we were trying to put those in today during in-game situations," Griego said. "We're going to go back to the drawing board and really work on those in practice. Obviously, offensively we need to continue to execute and have an even-balanced attack with going down into the post and shooting on the perimeter. But we're excited and we're ready (for the RMAC). These girls work extremely hard and their ready to start conference."
