Skyhawks roll to 4-0 road win over New Mexico Highlands to earn spot in RMAC Tournament

LAS VEGAS, New Mexico — The Fort Lewis College women's team put the exclamation point on an incredible two-week stretch to end the regular season, rolling to a 4-0 road win over New Mexico Highlands University on Sunday to earn a spot in next weekend's RMAC Tournament.

Just 14 days ago, Fort Lewis (7-6-3 overall, 6-4-3 RMAC) sat in 10th place in the RMAC standings before surging for points in five straight games, including four straight victories in must-win situations that was capped by Sunday's rout of the Cowgirls (0-15 overall, 0-13 RMAC).

The win clinched the seventh spot in the RMAC regular season standings for the Skyhawks, setting up a first-round date with No. 2 seed Colorado School of Mines at 12 p.m. Friday in Golden. It also guaranteed FLC its first .500 or better season since 2015.

"This is huge and hopefully a turning point for the program to start taking the steps to get back where it has traditionally been," said Fort Lewis head coach, Damian Clarke. "I think the kids are excited to keep trying to earn another game. They made that decision 4-5 games ago that they didn't want to be done playing."

Fort Lewis wasted little time capturing the momentum Sunday as senior Courtney Wamboldt played a ball across to fellow senior Bailey Webster, who promptly made a move at the top of the box and found the back of net just 12 seconds into the game before players had a chance to break a sweat.

It was the first of two goals on the afternoon for Webster as she cashed in an unassisted score, her fourth goal of the season, at the 66:14 mark to of the second half to up the lead to 2-0.

"We knew that this was Highlands' Senior Day, the first time they've had a chance to play on their home field all year, so it was an emotionally charged game for them. It was really good for us to get up early and make them doubt themselves from the beginning," Clarke said. "Bailey has been showing her experience here down the home stretch and it's been huge."

The Skyhawks poured it on with two more goals in the second half as sophomore Katie Smith and freshman Kinley Carter each netted their first scores of 2019.

Smith's goal, assisted by senior midfielder Emma Patron, came just two minutes after Webster to bump the lead to 3-0, while Carter rounded out the game's scoring with her first career goal in the 86th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Katherine Dunbabin picked up the win, stopping all five shots she faced in 75:25 minutes of game action, while senior goalkeeper Britt Blomso made one save in her 14:35 of playing time to seal the sixth clean sheet for the Skyhawks this season.

Offensively, as a team FLC finished with a 17-14 advantage in shots, including a 13-6 edge in shots on goal.

With the four goals on Sunday, the Skyhawks have now scored 11 goals during their four-game win streak after scoring eight goals through their first 12 games of the season.

"At the end of the day, you have to believe that you can score goals," Clarke said. "There's a difference between shooting and finishing. We were shooting a lot at the beginning of the year and weren't really finishing. Now, the shot count isn't the same as we saw the first 3-4 games, but we're being composed enough to finish the opportunities we create. It's a big step forward."

Fort Lewis will look to build off the momentum in Friday's first-round matchup against No. 16 ranked Colorado School of Mines, scheduled to kick off at 12 p.m. in Golden. The two teams played each other to a scoreless draw in Durango back on Oct. 4.

"Most Fort Lewis teams that have gotten themselves into the conference tournament in the past have been teams that (opponents) had to have a little concern for," Clarke said. "Hopefully we can go out and earn another game. We're not done playing."
