Second-half surge propels Skyhawks to 63-48 win over Adams State

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team was able to shrug off a tough first half during Saturday's RMAC matchup against rival Adam State University, flipping the game's script over the final 20 minutes to roll to a 63-48 victory inside Whalen Gymnasium.

With the win, Fort Lewis heads into the holiday break sporting an 8-2 overall record and 4-1 mark inside the RMAC, which currently puts the Skyhawks third in the conference standings behind Westminster and Colorado Mesa.

"Our first half; we didn't do the best we could have. But our coaching staff really challenged these girls and the second half was a different script," said Fort Lewis head coach, Orlando Griego. "Credit to our girls for really responding, being coachable, and being 4-1 in conference."

The two teams each began the evening flat as the Skyhawks and visiting Grizzlies (1-10 overall, 1-4 RMAC) ended the first quarter in a 10-10 tie. Tough sledding on offense continued for the Skyhawks, who shot 8-of-24 (33%) in the first half, as Adams State was able to scratch out a 28-25 lead at the break.

Fort Lewis would come to life in the third quarter, though, doubling up the Grizzlies, 22-11, to surge back in front at 47-39 while shooting 8-of-19 (42%) in the quarter, sparked by FLC's decision to implement a full-court press.

The Skyhawks produced all six of their steals in the third quarter, three of them coming via senior guard Kaitlyn Romero, who scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting in her 28 minutes, as well.

"We wanted to put some pressure on them, get the game sped up and get some early steals and (Romero) was really able to do that," Griego said. "Our girls did a really good job responding out of a timeout doing what we needed to do with getting those early steals and easy baskets."

The Skyhawks nailed down the victory with a solid fourth quarter where they shot 7-of-13 from the floor and were stifling on the defensive end, limiting the Grizzlies to nine points on 3-of-15 shooting (20%).

Offensively, FLC was led by freshman forward Jordan Vasquez with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, with seven of her points coming in the second half comeback.

Junior guards Sydney Candelaria and Katrina Chandler followed with eight points and seven points, respectively, while Chandler led the back court with five assists in her 20 minutes.

Junior forward Bailey Osmer and senior guard Kayla Herrera-Flores led the rebounding efforts for FLC, which owned a 46-34 advantage on the glass, with nine rebounds and eight rebounds, as well.

Griego credited his upperclassmen, especially the seniors, for the resurgence the Skyhawks have enjoyed so far in 2019-2020.

"For the seniors, to be able to go 8-2 overall and 4-1 in conference (this semester) it's a huge credit to them in stepping up, leading and wanting to win," Griego said. "I'm really proud of our girls thus far and I know they're not going to settle or be complacent.  They're going to want to continue to win."

Fort Lewis will look to keep the ball rolling when the team opens the new year with home matchups against Metropolitan State University of Denver (Friday, January 3) and Chadron State College (Saturday, Jan. 4).

Game times are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. tip-offs.

"It's going to be really big test for us. The nice thing is they're going to have just as many days off as us," said Griego of the matchup against MSU Denver. "At the end of the day, it's going to be who wants it the most. We're putting ourselves in a good position to really get some respect in the RMAC. We're going to continue to work and it's going to be a great game and really big weekend for us."
