Skyhawks snap streak against CSU-Pueblo, move to 2-0 to start RMAC play

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team put a bow on a spotless start to the RMAC tip-off weekend, grinding out a 67-54 victory over Colorado State University-Pueblo on Saturday inside Whalen Gymnasium to move to 2-0 inside conference.

"I'm extremely excited for these girls and super happy. To go 2-0 in conference to start off, protect home court, it's awesome," said Fort Lewis head women's basketball coach, Orlando Griego. "I'm really happy for these girls, they've worked very hard, so credit to them."

The victory for the Skyhawk (6-1 overall, 2-0 RMAC), who led wire-to-wire on Saturday, also snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Thunderwolves (2-5 overall, 1-1 RMAC) that dated back to March 5, 2013 when FLC topped CSU-Pueblo, 78-67.

It was a fact not lost on FLC senior guard Kayla Herrera-Flores, who was one of three Skyhawks to finish in double-figures on Saturday with 11 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists in her 27 minutes.

"It's almost surreal. You always go in expecting to beat them year after year and we hadn't been able to capitalize, so it feels amazing," said Herrera-Flores. "Especially knowing that we're protecting our home court and we're 2-0 in conference makes it even better."

The Skyhawks did the bulk of their damage at the start of each half, rattling off a 10-0 run to start the ballgame and a quick 9-0 blitz through the opening 2:33 of the third quarter that put CSU-Pueblo in a 42-25 hole.

Junior forward Jordan Carter paced all FLC scorers with 15 points and fell one rebound shy of back-to-back double-doubles.

With Carter feasting on the Thunderwolves interior defense, the Skyhawks then punished CSU-Pueblo when it helped off shooters as the team finished 6-of-14 from 3-point range, three of which came via junior guard Sydney Candelaria as she poured in 13 points as FLC's third player in double-figures.

Junior forward Chloe Warrington came off the bench and splashed two 3-pointers of her own in seven minutes, as well.

"A couple times we've told the girls that we really need to start off fast, start quick and make sure the other team adapts to our play," Griego said. "I think it's hard for teams to adapt to it because we're getting up and down really quick. Credit to (Carter) for starting that inside presence and then the supporting cast going around her and knocking shots down."

CSU-Pueblo was able to hang around, trimming the Skyhawks' lead to 12 on two occasions in the fourth quarter — the latest coming with 6:26 remaining — but FLC was able to methodically work its way to the 67-54 final.

The Skyhawks will now prepared for their longest road trip of the season, in terms of miles traveled, when they head to South Dakota next weekend for matchups against South Dakota School of Mines and Black Hills State University.

"Be prepared. It's exhausting to travel, especially all the way to South Dakota," said Carter when asked what she'd tell the FLC underclassmen in preparation for the road trip. "Be prepared to be tight when you get out so run through it, stretch, get ready and bring it because the two South Dakota teams always bring it."

Griego said that despite the hours of windshield time, his team will be ready to go Friday when they tip-off at 5:30 p.m. against the Hardrockers (2-4 overall, 1-2 RMAC).

"Our motto this year has been 'No excuses,'" Griego said. "Regardless if it's a long bus ride or flight, we're going to get on the bus and continue to stick to our game plan and hopefully go up there and win."
