Backed by Solid Pitching and Timely Hitting, Softball Starts 2-0 for First Time Since 1989

RIO RANCHO, N.M. – First the first time since 1989, the Fort Lewis College softball team is off to a 2-0 start to the season. That year, the Skyhawks won their first four games of the season. FLC started strong with a dominating 9-0 win over Oklahoma Baptist in five innings in the first game and then had another strong outing in the circle in the nightcap to take the 3-1 win over Eastern New Mexico in the U.S. Bank ENMU Softball Classic Kickoff Friday at the Rio Rancho Softball Complex.

FLC came out of the gates ready against Oklahoma Baptist, scoring in the first four innings to cruise to the win. The Skyhawks blew the game open with a five-run fourth inning to force the eight-run mercy rule win in the fifth. Seven players had at least a hit, with Allison Young, Taylor Hollestelle, Kylie Hefley and Pilar Gutierrez posting two-hit games. Kylie Hefley and Taylor Beaman each launched home runs as well.

In the circle, Emily Morris had a strong debut as she went four innings to get the win, allowing just two hits. Kelly Decker went the final inning and didn't allow a hit.

Young wasted little time getting things going for FLC in the first inning as she tripled to left-center. Hollestelle then brought her home with an RBI groundout to third for the early 1-0 lead.

In the second, McKenna Hefley was hit-by-pitch to open the frame and would come home on a two-run homer to left by Kylie Hefley for the 3-0 lead.

The Skyhawks added another run in the third as Young singled and Hollestelle doubled. After an out, Dana Dwyer put a ball in play that went as a fielder's choice after the catcher threw the ball away allowing Young to score for the 4-0 lead.

Then came the big top of the fourth where the Skyhawks put the game out of reach. Kylie Hefley singled to open the inning and came home on the next batter when Beaman drilled a two-run shot over the center field fence for the 6-0 lead. Gutierrez added a single and then stole second. Young walked and after Hollestelle reached on an error, Gutierrez and Hollestelle worked a double-steal with Gutierrez stealing home with the seventh run. With two outs, McKenna Hefley singled home Hollestelle and then Hunter Garcia came on to pinch-hit and singled home the ninth run of the game in Angelique Elemen for the 9-0 lead.

Morris would work a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth and Decker worked around an error in the fifth to close the game out for the Skyhawks.

In the second game, Mandy Lorenson carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, allowing just a pair of singles in the complete game victory. She added six strikeouts and only one earned run.

Elemen, McKenna Hefley, Kylie Hefley, Kaitlyn Barlow, Mackenzie Parks and Gutierrez all tallied hits, with Kylie Hefley and Parks driving in runs.

The Skyhawks came out strong right out of the gate with Young and Elemen walking, before a two-out single by Kylie Hefley drove in the first run of the game in the opening inning.

Eastern New Mexico tied the game in the third, but quickly went behind in the fourth inning when FLC tallied the final two runs of the game. Kylie Hefley opened the frame with a walk and after two quick outs, she stole second and came home on a single to left-center by Parks. After a single by Gutierrez and a walk to Young, Hollestelle drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the third run of the game for a 3-1 lead.

The Greyhounds tried to make one last run at it in the seventh. After a walk and a bunt single, a pick off marked the first out of the inning. Following a groundout notched the second out of the inning, a walk loaded the bases. Lorenson was able to get a fielder's choice groundout to third for the final out of the game to preserve the 3-1 victory.

FLC will play one more game in Rio Rancho tomorrow (Saturday) as they will face Eastern New Mexico at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available for the game.
