Trailblazers Use Big Second Half to Hold Off Men’s Basketball

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Marquel Beasley led the way with 18 points and despite a solid nine-point lead in the first half, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team couldn't withstand a rally by Dixie State in the second half as the Trailblazers came back for the 63-53 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win Friday night.

FLC (9-11, 4-10 RMAC) turned it on midway through the first half and held a nine-point lead at one point before settling on an eight-point halftime lead. Dixie State (10-8, 8-6 RMAC) rallied with a big second half, outscoring the Skyhawks 38-20 to comeback for the win.

Beasley went 7-16 from the field, along with five rebounds, two blocks and two steals in picking up his 18 points in 32 minutes. Kireed Johnson added nine points, making three three-pointers.

Johnson opened the scoring a minute in hitting a three-pointer. Trailing by three midway through the half, FLC went on a 10-1 run to open a six-point lead. Beasley started the run with a jumper and after a free throw by Dixie State, Johnson sunk back-to-back three-pointers before a layup by Beasley capped the run and left the Skyhawks with a 23-17 lead.

A Brenden Boatwright offensive rebound and put back stretched the lead to nine and after Dixie State scored the next four points, Will Wittman helped give the Skyhawks some momentum back when he drilled a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer for the 33-25 lead.

A Beasley dunk 34 seconds in kept the lead at eight and after a quick 7-0 run by the Trailblazers, the lead was cut to one. Dixie State kept coming, pushing back in front and after a Boatwright free throw tied the game at 38, a 9-0 run followed for the Trailblazers to take a 47-40 lead with 6:33 to play.

After Dixie State had the lead in double-figures, the Skyhawks tried to fight back, getting it into single digits a few times, with the last coming on a dunk by Otas Iyekekpolor, but there wasn't enough time left to make a run with the Trailblazers taking the win.

FLC went 19-54 (35) from the field, 5-21 (24) from three and 10-18 (56) at the foul line. The Skyhawks held the edge in second chance points (22-13).

Wade Miller led three Trailblazers in double-figures going for 15 points, while Matt Conway added 11 and Dub Price chipped in 10. Dixie State went 22-53 (42) from the field, 6-21 (29) from three and 13-15 (87) from the foul line.

FLC will close out their four-game road trip tomorrow (Saturday) night when they will travel to Salt Lake City to face Westminster starting at 7:30 p.m. The Griffins fell to Adams State, 75-70, on Friday night.
