Trailblazers Hold Off Men’s Basketball Despite 20 Points from Beasley

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team kept making a push, but each time Dixie State seemed to have an answer. After fighting back to within six points a couple of times in the second half, the Skyhawks couldn't come all the way back with the Trailblazers claiming the 63-50 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday night inside Whalen Gym.

The game was also part of a benefit night for the Griego Family that ended up raising $9,670 dollars for the family between both games.

FLC (11-14, 6-13 RMAC) got off to a strong start with AJ Sparks hitting a trey and a layup from Otas Iyekekpolor for the early 5-0 lead. Dixie State (15-8, 13-6 RMAC) fought back to tie, but FLC moved back in front when Marquel Beasley sent down a dunk at the 15:36 mark off an assist by Brenden Boatwright.

The Trailblazers answered with a 13-0 run that took over five minutes off the clock and left Dixie State with the 23-12 lead.

After falling behind by as many as 12, an Alex Semadeni three-pointer and a dunk by Boatwright within 35 seconds off each other had the Skyhawks back to within seven at 25-18.

Another Beasley dunk with three minutes to play in the half kept the advantage at seven before Dixie State outscored the Skyhawks by four the remainder of the half to take a 37-26 lead into the locker rooms.

Beasley opened the second half much of the way he did the first half by slamming down a dunk 35 seconds in and after adding a foul shot, FLC was back to within eight. A jumper by Boatwright at the 12:46 mark had FLC down just six at 43-37 and then a few seconds later another basket by Boatwright, this time a layup kept Dixie State ahead by just six at 45-39.

FLC would get back to within six one last time with 11:33 to play following a technical foul on the Dixie State bench, Semadeni would hit both foul shots.

Dixie State jumped back in front by double-digits before a Will Wittman three-pointer with 5:56 to play left the deficit at eight before the Trailblazers closed the game on a 7-2 run to take the 63-50 victory.

Beasley led the Skyhawks with 20 points on 9-14 shooting, along with six rebounds, an assist and a steal in 36 minutes. Boatwright added eight points and both Semadeni and Iyekekpolor tallied seven points apiece.

FLC sent back seven blocks in the game, one short of the season high eight against the University of the Southwest, with Iyekekpolor, Wittman and Kireed Johnson all sending two back apiece.

As a team, the Skyhawks went 19-52 (37) from the field, 4-23 (17) from three and 8-14 (57) from the foul line. FLC held the edge on points off turnovers (20-10) and were even in both points in the paint (30-30) and fastbreak points (8-8).

Matt Conway paced Dixie State with a game-high 22 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Jack Pagenkopf was next with nine points. The Trailblazers went 26-56 (46) from the field, 7-17 (41) from three and 4-6 (67) at the foul line.

The bigger Trailblazers dominated on the glass holding a 42-25 advantage which on the offensive end led to a 15-4 second-chance in points edge.

FLC will hit the road this coming week when they will play at Colorado Mesa Friday night and then against Western Colorado on Saturday with both games starting at 7:30 p.m.
