Elemen Breaks RBI Record During Day Two of Dixie State Tournament

ST. GEORGE, Utah – A day after breaking the program home run record, senior Angelique Elemen was back at it again Friday as she tied and later set the program RBI record against Western Washington. It was another close game to open the day as the Fort Lewis College softball team fell just short to Central Washington, 8-5, and then lost to Western Washington in the nightcap, 7-1, during day two of the Dixie State Courtyard Classic.

In the first game, Central Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a three-run homer in the first inning. FLC (3-4) worked their way back in the fourth frame. Elemen continued her tear with a leadoff single. After McKenna Hefley walked, Robyn Hall singled through the left side to drive in Elemen, as both Hall and Hefley moved up on the throw. A wild pitch followed to bring in the second run of the inning and moved Hefley to third. After a pitching change, Kaitlyn Barlow singled to left to tie the game at three and bring in Hall. The Skyhawks kept the inning going when Pilar Gutierrez and Kelly Barr each singled. After a groundout moved up both runners, Allison Young drove in the fourth run of the inning with a single to left leaving FLC with a 4-3 lead.

The Wildcats (4-1) responded in the home half when they plated three runs to move back in front at 6-4. They would add two more in the sixth, but FLC didn't go down without a fight in the seventh. With one out, Taylor Hollestelle singled and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Elemen then tied the program record for RBI when she drove in Hollestelle with a single to right-center, her 147th career RBI leaving FLC down just three. Central Washington was able to avoid any further damage, getting a double play to end the game with the Wildcats claiming the 8-5 victory.

FLC held a 10-8 advantage on hits and Central Washington committed the only error. Elemen led the way going 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Barr added two hits. In the circle, Kelly Decker started and went the first 3.2 innings, allowing six earned runs to end up with the loss (0-1). Dana Dwyer tossed the final 2.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs.

Savannah Egbert and Theresa Moyle led the Wildcats with two hits apiece, while Zerr drove in three RBI off her first inning home run. In the circle, Isabel Womack went the first three innings and allowed three earned runs. Samantha Stanfield came on in relief and picked up the win (2-1) after going four innings and allowing just two earned runs.

Elemen wasted little time setting the program RBI record as she homered in the first inning against Western Washington to break the old mark of 147, knocking in her 148th career RBI.

Western Washington (4-2) got on the board in the second plating three runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Vikings tallied three more in the third to jump out to a 6-1 lead. After Western Washington posted their seventh straight run in the sixth to move ahead 7-1, FLC threatened in the bottom of the sixth.

Young opened the frame with a single and then stole second. Hollestelle added a single to right to put runners on the corners. After Elemen reached on a fielder's choice to third to load the bases, a fielder's choice groundout forced an out at home, that was followed by a strikeout and pop out to end the inning.

In their last at-bat in the seventh, Mackenzie Parks tallied a two-out single and then Young kept the game going with a single to left-center. Similar to the sixth inning, the Skyhawks weren't able to plate a run as a lineout to third ended the inning and the game.

Western Washington held a 9-6 advantage on hits with Young leading the way with two hits. In the circle, Emily Morris started and went the first 2.2 innings and ended up with the loss (2-3) after allowing five earned runs. Kassidy Trumbo finished the final 4.1 innings and allowed just one earned run with three strikeouts.

Makinlee Sellevold, Emily Benson and Jackie Lucido paced Western Washington with two hits apiece, while Lucido drove in four runs. In the circle, Sellevold went all seven innings to grab the win (4-2) after allowing just one earned run and had nine strikeouts.

FLC will finish the Dixie State Courtyard Classic tomorrow (Saturday) when they face Northwest Nazarene starting at 12:30 p.m. Live stats will be available for the game.
