Three Reach Double-Figures as Men’s Basketball Faces Hot Shooting Rangers

DURANGO, Colo. – Having fought back to within two points in the second half, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team was right there until Regis got loose for 11 three-pointers in the second half to take the 86-70 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday night inside Whalen Gym.

In front of a near packed house for the white out game, FLC (10-13, 5-12 RMAC) fed off the energy, fighting back multiple times throughout the game. Regis (16-7, 13-4 RMAC) ended up leading wire-to-wire, but the Skyhawks certainly didn't make it easy.

Marquel Beasley led the way with 15 points on 6-12 shooting, along with five rebounds and both an assist and a steal. Alex Semadeni tallied 14 points on 5-10 shooting, along with seven rebounds and an assist. Kireed Johnson rounded out the three in double-figures with 10 on 4-8 shooting, two assists and a block. Otas Iyekekpolor and AJ Sparks just missed double-digits with nine points apiece.

Regis opened the scoring 38 seconds in and FLC tied it a minute later when Beasley sunk a jumper just outside the paint. The first three-pointer of the night for the Rangers followed when Ryan Beisty connected at the 17:53 mark. It ended up starting a 7-0 run to move Regis out to the 9-2 lead.

Sparks ended the rally with a jumper in the paint and then Iyekekpolor added a layup to cut the deficit to three. Down seven, a big dunk by Brenden Boatwright off a nice assist from Sparks helped ignite a 7-0 run to tie the game. It turned into a three-point-play as Boatwright hit the foul shot and after Beasley hit a free throw, Semadeni drilled a fastbreak three-pointer off the wing to even the score at 15 at the 13:47 mark.

With the game still tied at 17, Regis went on another 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 24-17. Trailing by as many as eight, a layup by Iyekekpolor before the half left Regis with the 32-26 lead at the break.

Iyekekpolor opened the scoring in the second half with a jumper 38 seconds in and five minutes into the second stanza, a jumper by Boatwright had FLC to within two at 39-37. Following another mini-run by the Rangers, FLC pulled back to within three a couple of times, first on a pair of free throws by Sparks and then on a triple by Johnson with 13:35 to play.

Over the next six-plus minutes, Regis went on a 24-9 to open up a 69-51 lead. The Skyhawks made one last push, getting to within 10 when Johnson hit a fastbreak layup and Semadeni hit a jumper off a backcourt turnover to leave Regis with a 74-64 lead.

Following a Beasley jumper with 2:47 to play brought FLC back to within 10, Regis closed it out hitting a few three-pointers and foul shots down the stretch for the 86-70 victory.

FLC held the advantage on second-chance points (10-8), bench points (28-24) and in fastbreak points (7-5), while going 24-55 (44) from the field, 6-25 (24) from three and 16-24 (67) at the foul line.

Regis had even point distribution throughout their lineup with seven players scoring at least eight points. Five reached double-figures led by 17 from Jarrett Brodbeck. Christian Little added 15, Tomas Auruskevicius had 13, Toni Rocak with 11 and Brian Dawson tallied 15. For the game the Rangers went 28-55 (51) from the field, 14-29 (48) from three and 16-23 (70) from the foul line. After starting just 3-11 (27) from three point range in the first half, the Rangers went 11-18 (61) in the second half.

FLC will remain at home this coming week when they will face Westminster on Friday and Dixie State on Saturday with both games starting at 7:30 p.m. inside Whalen Gym. Saturday's game will be a 100 percent donation game to enter as it will be a benefit game for assistant women's basketball coach Orlando Griego and his family.
