Seniors Combine for 60 Points on Senior Night Against Adams State

DURANGO, Colo. – The three seniors in Marquel Beasley, Alex Semadeni and Otas Iyekekpolor were honored before the game on senior night and then the trio paced the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team by combining to score 60 points. Despite the strong effort as a group, the Skyhawks couldn't overcome Adams State as the Grizzlies claimed the 90-79 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday night inside Whalen Gym.

Beasley led the way with 25 points on 10-19 shooting and made it a double-double with 13 rebounds. He also dished out three assists, sent back two blocks and had two steals. Semadeni went for 19 points on 4-9 shooting and went 10-11 at the foul line. He grabbed six rebounds, had an assist, a block and two steals. Iyekekpolor posted 16 points, along with six rebounds, three blocks and a steal.

Beasley got the game started right for the Skyhawks when he collected an alley-oop pass from AJ Sparks and sent it down with a thunderous dunk 13 seconds in. Following a pair of Semadeni free throws, a layup by Cesar Molina moved FLC (12-16, 7-15 RMAC) out to the 10-5 lead four minutes in.

Still ahead by three, Adams State (11-16, 11-11 RMAC) answered back with a 9-0 run to move out to a 18-12 lead. The Skyhawks came flying back with a jumper by Beasley and after two free throws by Semadeni and long ball by Kireed Johnson tied the game at 30 with 4:08 to play in the half.

The Grizzlies came back with an 13-0 run over the next three minutes to jump out to a 43-30 lead. FLC closed the half strong with two foul shots from Iyekekpolor and then a layup by Molina left Adams State with the 43-34 halftime lead.

The run stretched to 6-0 with two foul shots by Semadeni to open the second half and trim the deficit to seven. The lead was down to five when Will Wittman connected on a three-pointer. Just when the Skyhawks were working their way back into it, the Grizzlies came back with a 9-1 run to pull back in front at 57-44 with 15:24 to play.

A big three-point-play by Beasley on the ensuing possession helped spark the Skyhawks with Keven Biggs tallying four straight points and after an Iyekekpolor jumper in the paint, the lead was again down to five at 58-53 with 12:52 to play.

FLC had the lead down to four a minute later off free throws by Iyekekpolor, but another strong run by the Grizzlies pushed the lead back to 11 with eight minutes to play.

Showing fight on their home floor, the Skyhawks made one last run a few minutes later as Semadeni drilled a three-pointer and a Beasley jumper kept FLC within striking distance at 71-66. That would be as close as FLC would get until the final minute of the game when a Beasley dunk was followed by a three-pointer from Biggs to trim the deficit to five at 84-79.

The Grizzlies sealed the game down the stretch with Rickey Norris hitting foul shots and after a steal and fastbreak layup by Norris, there wasn't enough time for a comeback and Adams State took the 90-79 victory.

FLC went 25-70 (36) from the field, 6-26 (23) from three and 23-28 (82) at the foul line. It was a physical second half with 33 fouls called between the teams. The Skyhawks held the advantage on second-chance points (15-12).

John Dewey led four Grizzlies in double-figures with 25 points, Davere Creighton added 23 and both Norris and Justice Augmon scored 13 points apiece. Creighton made it a double-double with 12 rebounds. Adams State went 29-57 (51) from the field, 6-19 (32) from three and 26-36 (72) at the foul line.
As it turned out, with the win the Grizzlies claimed the eighth and final RMAC Tournament spot after Chadron State lost at MSU Denver.

FLC finished the 2018-19 season with an 8-7 record at home.
