Lacrosse Tallies 16 Goals to Roll Past Oklahoma Baptist

AZTEC, N.M. – Four Skyhawks recorded at least a hat trick to help lead the Fort Lewis College lacrosse team to a dominating 16-6 win over Oklahoma Baptist in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Monday.

The game was played in Aztec with Ray Dennison Field still not ready for play.

Ann Nelson and Rachel Hurst each scored four goals, while Nelson finished with five points. Delaney Benson and Maren Clark added hat tricks. Abby Escandon led all players with six points, all coming on assists. Daris Wienk was strong in net playing all 60 minutes and picking up the win after collecting seven saves. Nelson led the way in groundballs with six, Hurst forced four turnovers and she also led the team with four draw controls.

Nelson wasted little time getting FLC (1-2, 1-1 RMAC) on the board when she scored off a free position attempt just over a minute in. Oklahoma Baptist (2-4, 0-3 RMAC) fought back to tie just 12 seconds later.

Off another foul deep in the zone, Benson buried the second goal for the Skyhawks and then a minute later, Hurst delivered on a goal off an assist by Escandon for the 3-1 lead at the 26:28 mark.

Allena Wolfblack and Mia White each took passes from Escandon and buried them into the net to extend the lead out to 5-1. After the Bison fought back to within three at 6-3, the Skyhawks closed the half strong outscoring Oklahoma Baptist 3-0 over the final 14 minutes.

All three goals happened in a nearly two-minute window with Benson, Clark and Nelson all scoring to leave FLC with the 9-3 halftime lead.

After trading goals early in the second half, FLC put the game out of reach thanks to a 4-0 run to end the game. Holding a 12-6 lead with 15:30 to play, like the first half, the Skyhawks would lock down on defense and then continue to add to their lead.

Following a yellow card on the Bison gave the Skyhawks the advantage, Clark and Hurst scored within seven seconds of each other to move out to the 14-6 lead. Hurst and Clark then added another goal each down the stretch to provide the final margin of 16-6.

FLC held a 33-23 edge on shots, including 28-13 on goal. The Skyhawks forced 22 turnovers and were 16-16 on clear attempts.

Lauren McCormack led Oklahoma Baptist with three goals and four points. Courtney Barnickle played all 60 minutes in goal for the Bison and made 12 saves.

FLC will now hit the road this coming Friday as they will travel to Denver to play at Regis for an RMAC game starting at 3:30 p.m.
