Escandon Scores Hat Trick, Wienk Records 13 Saves at #7 Regis

DENVER, Colo. – Abby Escandon collected a hat trick, while Daris Wienk tallied 13 saves for the Fort Lewis College lacrosse team Friday at #7 Regis. The Skyhawks kept battling back, but the Rangers were able to pull away for the 19-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory.

Despite the goal differential, FLC (1-3, 1-2 RMAC) fired plenty of shots recording 27 shots, with 20 landing on goal. The Skyhawks also forced 14 turnovers and had 11 groundballs.
Escandon scored her hat trick on just four shots on goal, while Delaney Benson, Ann Nelson, Maren Clark and Allena Wolfblack added the other goals. Rachel Hurst dished out two assists, while Wolfblack added one. Hurst, Aitana Rivera and Mia White each had three groundballs, Nelson caused three turnovers and Nelson, Hurst and Rivera had two draw controls apiece. Wienk played all 60 minutes in net to come away with 13 saves.

Regis came out of the gates like the No. 7 team in the nation scoring four goals just over three minutes in. A timeout for FLC helped reset the Skyhawks as Nelson scored with a man-up on a free position goal at the 24:18 mark to leave the Rangers with the 4-1 lead. It was Nelson's fifth goal of the season.

Regis went on another run, scoring the next six goals over nearly 20 minutes to jump out to a 10-1 lead. Escandon then turned in a strong individual effort as she got loose on the left side of the net and was able to tuck it home for her third goal of the season with 5:24 to play in the half.

The teams traded goals before halftime with Benson scoring right before the halftime buzzer off a free position attempt for her seventh goal of the season and left Regis with the 11-3 lead at the break.

FLC wasted little time scoring to start the second half with the Skyhawks forcing an early turnover and then Escandon buried her fourth goal of the season just 56 seconds in the second stanza. After Regis recorded the next three goals, Wolfblack answered when she took a pass from Hurst and connected for her third goal of the season at the 23:24 mark to cut the deficit to 14-5.

Following Clark's fourth goal of the season with just over 13 minutes to play, the Rangers scored the next four goals when Escandon recorded her hat trick off a free position attempt for her fifth goal of the season off an assist by Wolfblack to provide the final score of 19-7 for the Rangers.

Sarah Myres led the Rangers with six goals and an assist for seven points. Four other players scored two goals apiece. Grace Rosenthal dished out four assists. Both Elle Crawford and Hope Correia saw time in goal with Crawford getting the win after playing the first 16:58 of the game and made one save. Correia then closed the game out turning away 12 shots.

FLC will now return home for their next two games, starting with Westminster on Friday, Mar. 29 starting at 1:30 p.m. and then against UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday, Apr. 7 beginning at noon. Right now, the location of the games are to be determined, as they could be played at Ray Dennison depending on field conditions. If not, the teams may also play at Durango High School or back down in Aztec at the Tiger Sports Complex. Updates will be posted on goskyhawks.com
