Softball Plays Pair of High-Scoring Games at Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The offense collected 17 runs in the doubleheader Saturday against Adams State as the Fort Lewis College softball team nearly rallied to win both games, but the Grizzlies took both games 12-10 in game one and 15-7 in five innings in game two in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Angelique Elemen set another program record when she doubled in the first game of the opener that moved her to 374 total bases, setting a new mark. She went on two hit a couple of home runs to now sit at 382 total bases. Elemen is now in fourth alone in the RMAC record books with her 50 home runs, just six short of tying for second. Three more RBI on Saturday leaves her at 159 and is just 11 short of breaking into the top-10 in RMAC history.

In the opener, Adams State (2-16, 2-4 RMAC) outhit Fort Lewis (5-14, 0-6 RMAC) 13-10, while the teams combined for six errors with the Grizzlies committing four.

Adams State opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning and then added four more in the third to move out to a 7-0 lead. FLC got the offense going in the fourth with Hunter Garcia drawing a walk before Dana Dwyer reached on a throwing error by the pitcher that moved both runners up to second and third. Pilar Gutierrez drove in the first run with an RBI groundout to second and then Allison Young tripled to center to plate the second run of the inning. Another error brought in the third run on a ball put in play by Taylor Hollestelle that was misplayed in right field to score Young. Elemen then delivered the big blow in the frame with a two-run shot to left leaving the Skyhawks down just two at 7-5.

Adams State answered back with four runs in the home half of the inning to jump out to a 11-5 lead. The Skyhawks got a run closer in the fifth when Dwyer doubled down the left field line to score Kylie Hefley who walked earlier in the inning to trim the deficit to five at 11-6.

FLC made the move to pull to within two with three runs in the sixth with a two-out rally starting with a fielding error by the left fielder that allowed Hollestelle to get all the way to third. Elemen quickly brought her home when she launched her second home run of the game, this time a two-run shot to center to move FLC to within three at 11-8. The inning kept going when McKenna Hefley reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and then scored when her sister Kylie Hefley ripped a double to right-center to plate the third run of the inning and leave FLC down just two at 11-9.

The Grizzlies posted a solo homer in the home half of the sixth to go back up three and then the Skyhawks made one more push in the seventh. Kaitlyn Barlow made it a two-run game again when she smacked a solo home run over the center field fence to cut the lead back down to two. Adams State was able to avoid further damage by getting a pair of groundouts to second to end the game with the Grizzlies taking the 12-10 win.

Elemen led the way for the Skyhawks going 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Hollestelle and Dwyer added two hits apiece. In the circle, Kelly Decker started and ended up with the loss (0-6) after allowing three earned runs in a third of an inning. Emily Morris came on next in relief and tossed 2.2 innings and allowed six earned runs. Kassidy Trumbo went the final three innings and gave up two earned runs with three strikeouts.

Brittany Phillips led Adams State with three hits while Angel Micciulli, Baylie Fryar and Kenzie Lange all added two hits apiece. Micciulli and Sarah Hansen drove in three runs apiece. In the circle, Phillips went the first four innings to grab the win after allowing five runs (one earned) to get the win (1-5). Jade Garbiso picked up her first save of the year going the final three innings and allowing five runs (two earned).

In the second game, Adams State held a 14-10 advantage in hits while the teams combined for five errors with four by the Skyhawks. Fort Lewis started strong in the first inning putting together a two-out rally with McKenna Hefley doubling to left-center to scored Hollestelle who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. After McKenna Hefley stole third, she scored on an RBI single to shortstop by Mackenzie Parks to move the lead to 2-0.

After Adams State scored a run in the home half of the first before the FLC offense again went to work in the second with another two-out rally. Hollestelle kept the inning going with a double through the left side to score Cassie Sloan who singled earlier in the inning. After Elemen walked, McKenna Hefley doubled down the left field line to score both Hollestelle and Elemen to push the lead to 5-1.

Then came the home half of the second inning and Adams State ended up scoring 13 runs on 10 hits and three FLC errors to take a 14-5 lead.

McKenna Hefley brought the Skyhawks a few runs closer in the fourth when she hit a two-run homer to left to also score Hollestelle who doubled to left-center earlier in the inning to cut the lead to 14-7. In the fifth, Adams State ended the game early with an RBI double to push the lead to 15-7 and force the run-rule win.

McKenna Hefley led the way with a 3-3 game and five RBI along with two runs scored. Hollestelle added two hits. In the circle, Parks started and went the first 1.1 innings to take the loss (0-1) after allowing nine earned runs. Kassidy Trumbo tossed a third of an inning and allowed two earned runs before Morris went the final 2.1 innings and allowed just one earned run with four strikeouts.

Samantha McDonald led Adams State with three hits while Sarah Rocha, Shelby Haskins, Zoe Munn and Phillips added two hits apiece. Munn, Phillips, Julia Jimenez and Lange drove in two runs apiece. In the circle, Garbiso tossed all five innings to grab the win (1-9) after allowing seven earned runs.

The two teams will wrap-up their four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. Video and stats will again be available.
