Benson Leads Lacrosse Against Concordia St. Paul

PUEBLO, Colo. – Delaney Benson posted the first goal of the game and later added two more to help lead the way for the Fort Lewis College lacrosse team against Concordia St. Paul. The Golden Bears put together a big first half on their way to claiming the 15-7 victory Saturday in non-conference action in Pueblo.

While Benson recorded three goals, Mia White added two, while Abby Escandon and Allen Wolfblack chipped in one apiece. Concordia St. Paul (3-2) fired 37 shots to 20 for FLC (0-1), holding a 24-14 edge on goal. The Skyhawks held a 12-10 edge on draw controls and Daris Wienk tallied nine saves in net.

Neither team could get much going over the first six minutes and after Concordia St. Paul missed on a shot, FLC countered and buried a goal by Benson at the 23:42 mark for the 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears then took over scoring the final eight goals of the first half to take an 8-1 lead into the locker rooms.

It ended up being a 9-0 run as they scored the first goal just over three minutes into the second half. White snapped the run after a good clear attempt by FLC led to her goal at the 25:07 mark. Wolfblack made it two straight as she scored just over two minutes later leaving it 9-3.

The teams would trade goals over the next few minutes as Benson answered the Golden Bears goal to leave it 10-4 with 18 minutes to play. That would be as close as the Skyhawks could get the rest of the way with Concordia St. Paul taking the 15-7 win.

Rachel Hurst, Aitana Rivera, Wienk, Escandon, Kenna Melvin and Wolfblack all had two groundballs, while Jillian Byron had three caused turnovers and Hurst, White and Ann Nelson had three draw controls apiece. Wienk went all 60 minutes in net for FLC.

Alina Boyce paced Concordia St. Paul with four goals, while Maddie Hentges had six points with two goals and four assists. The Golden Bears used two goalies with Katie Lottsfeldt starting and going the first 30 minutes of the game to get the win after allowing a goal, with four saves. Claire Hagen went the final 30 minutes and allowed six goals, to go along with three saves.

The Skyhawks will now return home for their home opener this coming Monday, March 11 against Rockhurst that will be played at the Aztec Tiger Sports Complex in Aztec, N.M., starting at 2 p.m. The game will count as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for FLC, while Rockhurst opened RMAC play earlier on Saturday picking up a 15-6 win over Westminster in Salt Lake City.
