Softball Celebrates Elemen on Senior Day Against Dixie State

DURANGO, Colo. – Angelique Elemen played her final two games in a Skyhawks uniform on Saturday, but the legacy she left on the program will remain for years to come. The Fort Lewis College softball team wrapped up the regular season against Dixie State and stayed close in both games, but again the Trailblazers, backed by strong pitching, defeated the Skyhawks 4-0 and 1-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Aspen Field.

Elemen was honored as the only senior on the 2019 team after the second game and will leave the program with multiple records that will last for years to come.

Elemen, from Litchfield Park, Ariz., played her entire career at Fort Lewis College. Starting right away as a freshman, Elemen led the Skyhawks in almost every offensive category and has since gone on to set five program records alone this year. She is the career program leader in home runs with 55, RBI with 181, hits with 229, doubles with 48 and total bases with 443. She finished her career just one home run away from tying for second in RMAC history and is seventh in the RMAC record books for RBI. Her other numbers include 123 runs scored, 755 putouts and 66 walks leaving her fourth in program history in runs, third in putouts and fourth in walks. This year she led the team in batting average (.418), hits (64), home runs (15), RBI (39), total bases (123), slugging percentage (.804), walks (22) and on-base percentage (.497), while tying for the team lead in doubles with 14. Elemen tallied 16 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games and put together a 12-game hitting streak. Angelique is among the national leaders in total bases, home runs, slugging percentage and batting average. Elemen received her Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology yesterday.

In the first game of the day, FLC (16-37, 11-29 RMAC) again went against Cambrie Hazel, but this time came close on a number of occasions to breaking through. After Dixie State (37-10, 31-9 RMAC) scored two on a home run in the first inning, the Skyhawks put a runner on right away in the home half. Leading off, Taylor Hollestelle battled before eventually working out a walk after 12 pitches. But a caught stealing on a hit-and-run attempt cut down the inning and left Dixie State with the 2-0 lead after one.

Another run crossed for the Trailblazers in the third and FLC would get a runner on via a walk in the home half by Robyn Hall and then Elemen picked up the first hit of the game in the fourth with a solid single to left.

Hazel was able to keep the game scoreless, as those were the only baserunners in both innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Pilar Gutierrez opened the frame with a single and later moved to second on a sacrifice, but again Hazel recorded a strikeout and lineout to leave the game 3-0.

Dixie State plated the final run of the game in the sixth to move in front 4-0. In the bottom of the sixth, Hannah Gondini drew a four-pitch walk and then almost scored when Dana Dwyer hit a double that fell between second and right field, but Gondini was thrown out on a close play at home to end the inning.

The Skyhawks then really threatened in the seventh. With one out, Gutierrez singled up the middle and Julia Roberts added a single to right. Following a strikeout, Hall hit a solid single deep in the hole between third and shortstop to load the bases. With the tying run at the plate, Hazel was able to induce a groundout to shortstop to end the game.

Dixie State outhit FLC 9-6 and neither team committed an error. Gutierrez led the way with two hits and in the circle, Emily Morris started and went all seven innings for the complete game to end up with the hard-luck loss (7-10).

Bailey Gaffin went 3-3 to lead Dixie State, while Jessica Gonzalez drove in two via a first inning home run. In the circle, Hazel grabbed her 16th win (16-5) of the season going all seven innings and allowing the six hits without a run. She added six strikeouts, but FLC batters also worked three walks.

In the regular season finale, it was a pitcher's duel throughout with Kassidy Trumbo and Carissa Burgess going toe-to-toe. In the first inning, Trumbo worked around a pair of two out singles when Dixie State tried to do a double-steal, but the runner was cut down at home.

The Trailblazers scored, as it turned out, the only run of the game in the second getting a leadoff single and then a single to drive in the run following a sacrifice bunt.

The game was delayed over 30 minutes in the second inning due to lightning. After play resumed, both pitchers continued to pile up the outs and then FLC threatened in the sixth. Kylie Hefley opened the inning with a single and then pinch-runner Cassie Sloan advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a groundout moved her to third with two outs, Elemen was intentionally walked and then a groundout the shortstop ended the threat.

Down to the last at-bat, Burgess was able to get a groundout, a lineout and then another groundout to end the game giving Dixie State the 1-0 victory.

Dixie State held a 6-2 edge on hits, while the Trailblazers committed the only error. In the circle, Trumbo went all seven innings for the complete game and ended up with the hard-luck loss (4-12) allowing just the one earned run. She didn't have any walks.

Six players had a hit for Dixie State and Kasey Crawford drove in the only run. In the circle, Burgess went the distance going all seven innings for the win (20-4) after allowing just two hits and a walk.

FLC ended up just missing out on making the RMAC Tournament, as Regis ended up falling in all four games to MSU Denver but held on to the seventh seed. Adams State dropped all four games to UCCS and CSU-Pueblo was able to split with Colorado School of Mines to move into the eighth seed. Chadron State lost both games on Saturday to Black Hills State. As it turned out, Regis just held off CSU-Pueblo by percentage points (.343 to .342) for the seventh seed. Adams State (.324) finished just short of the eighth seed and Black Hills State made a late push to end up with a .303 percentage. Colorado Mesa claimed the regular season title and will host the RMAC Tournament in Grand Junction next week.
