Eleven Skyhawks Earn NFFCC Academic Accolades

BOULDER, Colo. – The National Football Foundation Colorado Chapter (NFFCC) recently announced the student-athletes that earned academic honors with 11 Fort Lewis College football players taking home accolades.

The criteria to qualify were cumulative grade point averages of 3.3 or higher for first team status (3.0-3.29 for honorable mention), and 70 percent participation rate (unless injured) and a regular (starter, regular in the game on a rotating basis or a specialist); GPA's are cumulative and through the fall 2018 semester.

Landing on the first team were senior Jeffrey Brinkley who holds a 3.78 GPA and is majoring in sports administration. From Livermore, Calif., already earned All-RMAC Academic first team honors and was named to the All-RMAC honorable mention team for his play on the field after anchoring the offensive line each of the past two seasons. He was also a finalist for the Scholar-Athlete award with the NFFCC.

Senior Dre Cortez from Dallas, Texas, holds a 3.44 GPA and is majoring in exercise science. Cortez started at defensive back throughout his career at Fort Lewis and saw action in seven games during the 2018 campaign before missing the final three games due to injury. Cortez recorded 45 tackles, 25 solo, an interception and five passes defended.

Sophomore Nate Higgins from Longmont, Colo., holds a 3.63 GPA and is majoring in business administration. Higgins made the transition from receiver to defensive back for the 2018 season tallying 23 tackles, 16 solo, along with two passes defended and a forced fumble in playing in all 10 games. He also was named to the All-RMAC Academic honor roll squad.

Freshman Hogan Keasler from Midlothian, Texas, holds a 3.33 GPA and is majoring in English. Keasler opened the season as the starting kicker before suffering an injury midway through the season. Before the injury, he played in four games going 2-4 on field goals, 11-12 on extra points and had 17 kickoffs travel an average of 61 yards, resulting in four touchbacks.

Senior Frank Larriva from Santa Ana, Calif., earns another academic honor after being named to the All-RMAC Academic honor roll team. The defensive lineman saw action in eight games during the 2018 season, posting 20 tackles, nine solo, two tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and three quarterback hurries.

Junior Brandon Redd from Visalia, Calif., holds a 3.46 GPA and is majoring in criminology. He started throughout the 2018 season along the offensive line, helping the team tally 26 touchdowns and 2,949 yards.

Freshman Ryan Travis from Boulder, Colo., holds a 3.42 GPA and is majoring in exercise physiology. Travis spent time playing both wide receiver and defensive back, seeing action in nine games with six tackles, with four being solo.

Four were named to the honorable mention team. Trevor David, a redshirt freshman from Erie, Colo., holds a 3.13 GPA and is majoring in sport administration. David played in nine games at defensive back posting 15 tackles, 11 solo, a pass defended and recovered a fumble.

Senior Josh Howell from Culver City, Calif., holds a 3.22 GPA and is majoring in sport administration. Howell played in seven games along the offensive line helping the team tally 26 touchdowns and 2,949 yards.

Redshirt sophomore Sam Kullberg from Brighton, Colo., holds a 3.27 GPA and is majoring in exercise science. The tight end played in all 10 games last season grabbing 16 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Kyle Mudick from Aurora, Colo., holds a 3.11 GPA and is majoring in sport administration. Mudick played in all 10 games along the offensive line during the 2018 season, helping the team tally 26 touchdowns and 2,949 yards.
