Lee's late goal propels Skyhawks to 3-2 victory over St. Edward's

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — The Fort Lewis men's soccer team rode the rollercoaster Friday afternoon out in Colorado Springs in its 3-2 victory over St. Edward's University.

The Skyhawks led 2-0, were stuck in a 2-2 tie late, and then felt the thrill of junior Ryan Lee's game-winner in the 88th minute to cap off its first of two neutral site games, hosted by the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

"Our guys responded really well," said Keane Hamilton, Fort Lewis men's soccer assistant coach, about the adversity the Skyhawks faced after losing a 2-0 lead. "It was similar to our game last Sunday against Hawaii Pacific, but this time we found our finishing touch and hopefully we've learned from it."

The game Hamilton referenced was a 2-2 tie for the Skyhawks (2-0-1), where they rallied for a 2-2 tie, but missed opportunities for a win late.

That was not the case Friday as Lee was able to cash in on his third goal of the 2019 season with 2:01 remaining in regulation.

"He was impressive all game and a handful for their center backs to deal with," Hamilton said of Lee. "The chance came to him and we were very impressed with how he handled a very high-stress situation. He stayed calm, picked a good spot, finished the shot and sealed the game for us."

Lee's heroics were made possible thanks to a break-out game for redshirt sophomore Loic Jean Baptiste, a late addition to the Fort Lewis roster, as the midfielder scored his first two goals as a member of the Skyhawks.

Jean-Baptiste's first goal came on an assistant from senior defenseman Ty Lang, while his second goal was a showcase of one-on-one skill the France native is capable of displaying this season.

"Loic has been working hard the last few weeks to get his fitness to where it needs to be. He was really close to scoring last weekend and we knew he'd start taking those chances," Hamilton said. "His second goal was just an incredible solo effort to take it 60 yards and finish it himself. He's a special player and we're happy to see him start to show what we think he can be."

In net, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Peter Byrne made four saves en route to earning his second win of the season.

Fort Lewis will now turn its attention toward to Sunday's matchup against St. Mary's University (2-1 overall), which is coming off a tight 1-0 loss to UCCS on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.

"They are another really solid team that works hard. We're expecting another tough one," Hamilton said. "We need to make sure we keep our focus where it was (Friday)."
