Fort Lewis falls to West Texas A&M, finishes Skyhawks Volleyball Classic at 2-2

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team concluded its three-day Skyhawks Volleyball Classic on Saturday, falling 3-1 to West Texas A&M University.

Fort Lewis (4-5 overall) finished the tournament with a 2-2 mark, with their only losses coming against No. 4 ranked Washburn University and a previously unbeaten Lady Buffs team (6-1 overall), who also suffered their first loss of 2019 Saturday against the high-ranked Ichabods.

The Skyhawks were plagued by inconsistency in Saturday's tournament finale as they fell 25-9 in Set One and 25-6 in Set Two, sandwiched around two strong performances in the middle sets.

After losing a tight 25-17 battle in Set Three, Fort Lewis stormed back from a 20-14 deficit to win the third set, 26-24.

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, they were unable to capitalize on the momentum as West Texas A&M rebounded to take the match 3-1, aided by a .341 attacking percentage and a three-headed attack of Lindsay Smith (18 kills), Torrey Miller (14 kills) and Salena Batiste (12 kills).

Fort Lewis was led by senior middle blocker Bailey Longacre, who was named to the Skyhawks Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team by the coaches, and junior Alex Treguboff with seven kills apiece.

Senior outside hitter Ohiyah Shirley and sophomore middle blocker Tye Wedhorn added six kills and five kills, respectively.

Freshman setter Payton Harmann capped her strong tournament with 26 assists and 10 digs.

Defensively, freshman libero Joviana Romero popped up a team-high 16 digs and Shirley chipped in nine digs to help pace the Skyhawks.

The team will now turn its attention toward RMAC play, which gets underway at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 on the road against Metropolitan State University of Denver.
